now Hillary camping equipment I grew up with was basically junk but a generation earlier the stuff in the 50s was supposed to be much better and had Sir Edmund Hillary backing it , the Mt. Everest climber.

so many things became a brand name to be bought and sold and are just a name used by the former company for a brand recognition.

Herters had a combo muskrat-coon dry powder lure that came in I think a 12 oz white water-resistant paper bag. Anybody remember that? It was dynamite for nutria which were my cash cow back in the mid 70's. I have made several attempts to find and possibly acquire the recipe after Herters closed with no luck.

Also my very first 330's were Herters I bought in 1976. In fact the first 330 I ever got whacked by was a Herters....man those springs were strong!!!!

Muskrat, by any chance is that dry powder combo lure in that catalog of yours? We were buying it by the mid 70's.

I am sure I still have some traps with the H on the pan, I should dig around some day and see if I can find them.

I had some of their coil spring traps. They worked nice in rat houses during the winter trapping season.
I also had a Herter's 12 gauge O/U. Great shotgun. Blacksmith told me to get rid of it because it would eventually be hard to find parts for it. I traded it in on a Winchester 101. Which I still had it, though.

A guy who had insurance with me was a friend of George's. Said he was a real nice guy, but a character. Always going 100 miles an hour.

I bought a Herter's branded collet style bullet puller off ebay, and it was a re-branded Forster. I always assumed they were a bit like Sears as they sold a lot of stuff with their name on it, but didn't make any of it.

Thanks Muskrat. Must have for sure been in the '76-77 edition if not before. I think they called it their water animal special. It was a sweet smelling fruit like powder.

HERTER'S -- currently trying to sell reloading stuff that my bother-in-law had for my sister. He passed a couple years ago. Herter's reloading dies, case trimmer, powder scales and Super Model 3 reloading press. That reloading press is cast iron and what a tank. Herter's was the go to place for ordering reloading equipment in the 60's and 70's.

Still have that Blue $1 catalog refund coupon around somewhere! LOL

I didn't discover Herter's until just before they were acquired by Cabelas. I purchased a couple dozen foam mallard decoys from them and another dozen from Cabelas after the change over. I prefer these decoys to the plastic floaters, particularly on big water... they just seem to float more naturally and don't pitch about when the weather gets a bit sporty.

I wish I had know about them much earlier, it is a shame that the decoys were taken out of production.

Somebody still makes Deke's with the Herter's name on them. I think Bass Pro has them.

And I had the privilege of observing his original initiation into the 330 club. In later years I observed him making renewal dues payments!

I had a brand new Herters Beef skinner Beaver type knife and leather sheath gave to me by an old boy last winter. Said he bought it in the 70s.
