Welp Dad's been researching a lot for his first "custom" AR told him I'd help out with parts and assembly so he's ordering his side charging upper and I just got the barrel . Man about had a stroke over the phone when I told him how much most of the barrels cost (was gonna go with ballistic advantage)so went with a bear creek 16". I've had nothing but good luck from my other two so we'll see
[Linked Image]

Now to find him a scope he won't be scared to use a long with a handgaurd configuration.
He's really liking the idea of the new style hunting AR set ups . Just sent me this and said it's how he wants it so

Wolfie, seeing as your saving on the barrel, put a Geissele trigger on it. It's a heck of a deal.

I'll have to see what he thinks. Dad is a real old dog type in a lot of aspects prefer stuff being close to milspec ect. Noticed the lighter triggers in mine freak out a little so.....might be a future addon. Thanks for the heads up though !

If you did not get an announcement, Alpha Munitions released 6ARC brass. I ordered some to try. How about a video borescoping that barrel?

Really ? Dang that's some nice stuff ! Been hearing talk that alpha is better the Lapua actually! But probably just going to go with starline for right now because I'm 90% sure dads not gonna pick up any brass unless it's in the broad open laugh

And I'll definitely be doing a bore scope of the barrel ! Now I'm just trying to figure out what I'll do for bullets eek thinking of maybe some speers . Wanted some serria TMK's but haven't seen them in a while.... Might go with some ELDX's...... But dad neck or head shoots about everything, might just load up some heavy Vmaxes laugh

In terms of .....how shall we say it.......experience........I'm a lot closer to Wolfie's dad than Wolfie. So share the same mindset. Having said that, the cost of the shooting iron would be of less concern to me than the risk of having that investment orphaned by lack of ammo. If past 3 or 4 years have taught us anything it was a weapon without ammo is just a club to wave around and not a very good one at that. There have been a pant load of these 6 and 6.5mm calibers released in recent years. If I went with one, I'd want to know for certain there would be ammo for it. This is coming from a guy who loads for 6mm Rem.........a once popular caliber for which factory ammo and new brass have all but dried up. Even for a guy who reloads, without brass, you don't have much.

So for a rifle that flings brass, this isn't like a 5.56 or 308 with brass or ammo cheap and in abundance everywhere,.......I'd lay in way more brass or ammo than I thought I would ever need, then double that. The bullets and powders not as important as the LR primers and even more so......the brass.

Was shooting Friday with a group of guys out to 600 yards. One of them had a Ruger Ranch II in 6 ARC. I was very impressed with its performance. Once he had dope figured, a 9 yr old kid went 5 for 5 at 600. The kid was all smiles.

I'm in the same boat as you with a 270 WSM. I've learned my lesson and all but have more than will last my lifetime.

I ordered a 6 ARC proof research barrel. I already have more brass than I will need for quite some time and if I really like it won't take much to get more than I'll ever need.. It takes a small rifle primer and will work decent with several different powders so covered there. 6mm bullets have always been available if one isn't picky in times of need.

If an individual doesn't have the ability to reload they would be prudent to stay more main stream.

One would think the large rifle primer situation would soften one of these days. When it does, buy 10,000

Well like I said in past posts , my dad honestly just plain doesn't shoot alot lol. I mean maaabye 30-50 Rd a year of center-fire and that's REALLLLLY pushing it. Why ? Idk loves guns , loves seeing me shoot and all my lil escapades but after a few rounds he's done saying her doesn't wanna waste ammo. Also isn't crazy one the whole chasing groups like me. If he can hit a beer can or bucket at a given distance he's usually pretty happy.Odd to me ( especially when I'm buying it for the range trip) but hay that's my old man lol laugh honestly feel it's partly because he never wears ear pro tired but yeah when you somone like that the whole ammo availability things is kinda a silly thing to me for the most part. Like find what the gun likes drop a few hundred and get a case of it and be happy for the next 20-30years. Even then if your really worried...just get another gun in a common caliber and just keep it prepped and ready. I have had idk how many people tell me I need to get common calibers and have ammo for them instead of allt eh crazy stuff I play with and when I tell them " um yeah ..I got XYZ with so much ammo for each , they usually seem really really surprised....which confuses me to no end. I mean if still keep your civic or camera around if you get a sports car right ?

And also cool thing is with a lot of the calibers I messa with I tend to go after ones that I can form brass for them with already existing popular options. 6 and .22 ARC ? Just run 6.5 Grendel into the appropriate die and trim , 6.5 Grendel is well established and no going anywhere anytime soon. I picked the KAK 17-5.56 over .17rem, fireball or hornet because I can form my own brass from dirt cheap 5.56 that's legit every where. It's also the reason I just cannot see myself going after some of the big magnums or really old calibers eveyone loves to talk about and say " O THAT NEW THING IS JUST THE __________" like that's amazing but have you tried finding brass for your 2298 savage Improved ? laugh

Never thought the 6rem would
play hard to get.
Which 6 is here to stay?
Probably the $1000 question.

OP maybe get Dad some cheapo ear muffs
and a big box of shells.
He might shoot more.

As its been down through the years,, more so the last 20 years, they change depending on the reports/hype they get. as of now the 6mm creed is the end all to do all as far as 6mm's go.

Sooo been racking my head on bullets and after a good bit of though think I'm gonna go with the serria 85gr game kings for a bit. Not too light not too heavy, j don't know how this barrel will be throated so and long with the mag length restrictions so think this will be good for alt lest preliminary load testing and the like.

So appears the 6mm ARC is one of Hornady's new calibers........and when you look at factory ammo they offer for it......there are 4 bullets. Only one of which.....the ELD-X is a hunting bullet. Compared to most other 6mm hunting bullets, the ELD-X reminds me of the SR71 Blackbird.......long and sleek. But if you load the ELD-X to factory ammo specs, it ought to feed thru the magazine and chamber. But all of the bullets Hornady offers for this caliber are of the long, sleek high BC type. If the barrel has a fast twist, might be good to follow suit.

My ARC is a 7.5 twist, I feed it 103's, 105's and 108's. With anything lighter it is identical to the 6mm PPC.
