I don't use much on mine, but when I used to coon hunt I would skin them by stepping on the body , the fat and blood gave them a shine like no other, I bought the boots when I bought my pup, we traveled lots of miles together, I buried him when he was 12 I'm guessing them boots lasted 20 years or more and fat mud and blood is the only coatings they ever got.

Rendered beaver fat. Didn't darken my work boots that I use. They now shed water like they had a coat of turtle wax on em'. Was thinking about trying beaver sac oil on the next pair. Can't say for sure on western boots. Not too many people wear them out my way and I've never had a pair

I don't know how to not darken them
mink oil and neats foot oil both work well but darken some
venison tallow and bees wax minimally darkened but darkened
you need to get them good and warm to really get it to soak in
in the winter set them in front of the wood stove , in the summer on a paper bag in the dash of your truck parked in the sun.
I have a jug of neat's foot oil I use on my leather gloves but it definitely darkens them ,but makes them last much better.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Just picked up some western boots for casual wear and looking for some boot dressing that doesnt darken the leather. I use Obernaufs on my Schnees, Danners and Thorogood boots...great stuff...but it darkens the leather. Thats not a problem for those boots, but Id rather not darken these boots. I found a product called Bick 4, supposedly wont darken the leather and even made here in michigan. Just wondering if there are other options Im missing. I know theres a lot of boot wearing folk on here...any recommendations ? Obenaufs is the best I have found by far.Yes it darkens the leather a bit.
