Water in the gas it sounds like if you can disconnect the fuel line pump some gas into a glass jar if its waters in there it will separate from the fuel.

Always the same gas station? Try a different station.
Any check engine light? "Trying to choke out" sounds like too much fuel. Are you sure of that? Or is it too little fuel and by feathering the throttle you are bypassing the idle air control circuit and allowing more air in.
If possible, a fuel pressure gage will help diagnose this issue.

can you hook up to the shrader valve on the fuel rail and see if you get any junk out when you collect in a glass jar
I had an issue with my kids Suzuki , the #4 injector was getting clogged , I thought it was a bad coil , and getting gas or not sometimes effected it
you may be running down a cylinder
it may eventually get through the clog and start working again
a can of sea foam seemed to help for a little while but nothing kept working until I replaced the injectors , which I ordered from amazon as even the auto parts stores told me they had to order them in and it would take a week they wanted 60 each and I got 4 for 60 , they may not last 100k or anything but the car is 20 years old it isn't lasting another 100k either.

My wife had a rio, it was horrible on plugs and coil packs. No power and would shake like crazy. If the coil goes out, I recommend changing plugs as well before you change the coils.

it probably won't be long before it tells you a cylinder missfireing
pull the coil while it is running , it will be shocking if it is working and then you know it is the injector
yes that is how I figured it out and it only hurts for a few seconds
I plugged in a known good coil to the cable while the car was running poorly , shocked myself , then replaced the injector and all was good.
