I think the most important thing a person HAS to do when they decide they want to change, whether its to work out or diet, or both, is have a goal. What are you looking for? And then make small steps and small changes to get there.

There are so many different "programs" out there, it can be hard to choose one. Start by deciding what you want. Weight loss? Get stronger? Bigger muscles? The pick a program that allows you to attain your goal. A bodybuilding program won't be right for strongman. A strongman program won't be right for weight loss. And change takes time, so patience is necessary. If you are looking to slim down, you didn't gain the weight overnight, so you won't lose it overnight. And if you are looking to build/maintain muscle later in life, it is a lot tougher than when you were 19. I didn't start seriously lifting until I was 40, it takes a lot more to gain strength at that age.

Prices are dropping now, big time. Cast iron can be had for as little as 50 cents to a dollar a pound. Racks are still a little spendy, but better than they were.

$1/lb is everywhere, but not what I'd consider cheap, lol.
But then, I'm REALLY cheap.
And my lifting days are over...

Couple of my kids are still at it though, one SERIOUSLY.

No weights? Rocks are awesome for full body workouts.

I’m too busy working to work out I’ve found that a good work ethic beats working out until you’re tired then quitting. Just the way I do it.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

To each their own. Working out and strongman is something I truly love doing, so I make time for it. My day job is a computer jockey, so that is working against me staying in shape. So outside of work I have to make up for that time. Yard work, chores, honey do list, other hobbies and working out.
I also don't work out til I am tired. I have a set workout for each day. I do that workout, and that is it. Am I tired after a workout? sure, but that is where a good recovery plan is necessary. Good nutrition, therapy, etc., so I am still able to do stuff after a workout. Its not uncommon for me to do a heavy deadlift program then spend 3 hours working in the yard.

All the 70-80-90 year olds I know that are still active/mobile have one thing in common

A consistent/daily stretching routine,,,

I see a lot of 50-60 year olds that can hardly go from kneeling to standing up without a lot of effort

Difficult getting out of a chair,,,

That’s a mobility issue,,,, easily solved with basic stretching

Thanks for helping fuel my motivation!

I guess it's been a couple months ago that I made a post about home gyms. I went out and bought an upper body and a seated leg curl/extension machines. I played around with different weights over the course of a few days to see where I was at and then settled in on weight that would tax my system but not something so heavy I couldn't move it. I've been at it every day since, alternating between upper and lower body.

I've been doing multiple sets, minimum of three, with 12 reps per set. I set a timer so my sets are 45 seconds to one minute apart. I'll be sixty-five in November and have the physique of a healthy twenty-five year old. I'm pleased with how quickly I bounced back.

My biggest challenge is trying to consume enough protein, carbs and calories. I have to force myself to eat, especially when I don't feel like it.

My wife and I do CrossFit at her Sister’s gym 4-5 nights a week. Wife is going to be 54 this year and qualified for the second round (top 25% of the world) in this years CrossFit games. I have mobility issues that prevent me from doing some of the more advanced lifts, but slowing working to gain more mobility. Also helped me lose 50lbs.

Also depend on what someone does for work. When I was Ironworking, tower climbing, and doing tree work work keep me in shape I was also younger. Today operating equipment work won't keep me in shape any more than an office worker.

Congratulations to everyone that's keeping in shape, getting started and making progress.

K is correct on deciding on what your goals are. My wife's are different than mine so she needs lighter weight higher reps. Mine I need a little more weight and less reps. But my goals are to be in shape feel better and get back some strength.

Hard for a first work out. Leg pressure with zero weight 20 reps then two sets of 20 with a big 90 lbs. Leg cruls and extention with 5 lb set of 20 the 20 lbs.sets of 20. Abduction and Inductions again very light and sets of 20. Basically any movement your not used to will make you sore so was very light in weight but still a good work out for her to get started. Also hit some back, shoulders and chest a few light sets to remind her of what to do and 15 min on the treadmill mill to cool down. A basic light work out but hard work out when your out of shape.

Your screen name seems to be very accurate. But know it all may be even a better fit. From your first response like k spent to much money on his set up to the poking at many others in their threads got to say you seem to be a very unhappy individual that can use some joy Your life and I hope you find it. Building people up is a much better past time than being jealous ant trying to tear them down. Try it some time.

I can see now if I start a work out progress thread it will get nuked because there will be the same sad individuals making negative comments. Posting about what's going on will turn into alway bragging about progress. Work, working out, Investing, farm progress, heck I can't believe they haven't come out on post about the kids hunts or trapping success. Maybe Mark June was right.

Hmmm, this coming from the millionaire that has no family life. Let me school you kid, ask anyone alive that’s ever ever hit a gym and what’s the one day or body part everyone hates??? Yep, leg day. Why, because even trying to get your shoes on the next day hurts. Going to the bathroom hurts. Heck getting in and out of a vehicle hurts. It’s not exactly something you have someone doing “just getting back into the gym” and trying to start an exercise program. I used your words, not mine. You said a “hard workout”. Were you just bragging…again?
And yeah man, I’m not a millionaire, so weights are expensive too me. I looked at just 15lb dumbbells and they were right at $50 for a pair. Not spending that, heck a gym membership is cheaper. Don’t see anywhere I’ve bragged about anything in my life except that I wouldn’t change anything about it. See, I spent time with my children growing up. I was there for all their first. I’m the first one called when they do something special in their eyes. Heck, my son just bought a new bow yesterday evening (his first brand new bow) and I got called and told all about it. I wouldn’t trade my wife for any other woman on this planet and she knows it.
Not sure where your comments come from except maybe from things lacking in your own life. I’m all about working out and people getting into shape. I’m not about braggarts, which you seem to have to try and convince everyone how great you are. Good for you! Happy for ya. Something else you might want to learn, if you don’t want comments, don’t post it. And hope you and your wife stick with the workouts.

And some say politics is too contentious. Anyhow, most guys skip leg day because babes like big arms, ripped abs and good pecs. Shoulders rank right up there. Don't neglect your glutes. If you doubt me ask your wife or girlfriend.

I’m all about leg days, but I’m gonna get someone hooked before subjecting them to that kind of punishment, lol. I got an arm workout that will leave you having to have someone else wipe your butt.

It's leg day for me. Not as gratifying as an upper body pump but balance has got to be maintained.

Guess I am one of the odd ones. I LOVE deadlift day. I have to force myself to do upper body. To me it's boring.

Except for log press. If I had my own log at home, I'd be pressing that every day I could.

I'll bet you have great glutes. I have a buddy who is a powerlifter. Just a monster.

Posco, nope, haha. My wife complains daily that I have no rear. Quads are a different story.

Glutes…check
Quads…check
Calves…gone out to pasture!!
I can work them until I can’t walk and they refuse to grow!

Worked out with an old bodybuilder. Legs only once a week because his grew so easily. Back in his prime he had 36” legs! At 60 the old man is throwing around 405 on the bench like it’s a warm up. He won’t go any higher cause the Doc told him he needs to lose weight. That man is just built completely different.
