Read the strictly trapping forum. Ton of information. One of the reasons for asking for it at the time, was it's focused on what you want to learn. A lot of knowledge exists with the ole run of the mill trappers that don't promote themselves.

Praise the Lord and Pass the ammunition.

Good for you .. Some good advice has been given already to you. I will go over it again. Get up early in the mornings Go scout your property now . Put you out one or two bait stations where you find canine sign they will come dig it out if they are in the area then you will have places to make sets . Bait your holes about once a week as season gets closer put more stations out to have more set opportunities.

What’s wrong with getting info from all the trappers on here that aren’t the BEST? You’re going to end up not getting any advice or help from anyone with that attitude.

You’re not learning anything asking all the questions you’re asking. Trapping and being a good trapper comes from experience. It’s going to take you years of trial and error to learn it and figure things out.

By the time you get a girlfriend there’s a good chance you won’t even trap anymore.

Settle it down a bit! Spend your time making sure you got all your traps and gear ready to go. Walk around the areas you plan to trap and look for some fox/coyote tracks.

Then just wait for season to come around.

Once you start trapping and have a question, ask it on here and you’ll get all the correct answers you can handle from regular trappers that aren’t the “best”.

Now go for a walk!

I dont trap thousands of canines but can catch what is around.
I can give you the "secret" to being the best canine trapper,or the best any species trapper.

locate a large area to trap where the population of your target animal is high and get the rights to trap it

Learn about 3 proven simple sets that produce the most and are quick and easy to make

Pull together enough equipment to make an 8 or 10 hour day worth of sets, double or triple that if you are on 2 or 3 day checks
Also enough equipment to keep them working throughout the season.

Have a place to skin stretch and dry and store your fur and the tools necessary to do it.A few freezers will come in handy too.

And the main thing you need is a non stop work ethic.
Start small and work your way up.
The best way to learn the trade is to apprentice with an older trapper who might need help on his line from a young fellow.
That is how almost all trappers in my area learn the buisness.

If you really want to learn, FurtakerTV is a great deal. I think it's ten bucks a month to watch lots of excellent trappers. It's never been easier to find good trapping information, just gotta avoid some of the newbie "pros" on YouTube.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

We all are.

The better question is, how good is your BS detector?

Seriously though we got some great wolfers on board and some solid dog catchers and some not so much but I think all of would agree there ain't no magic secrets to it other than setting steel and paying attention to what happens. Lots of steel and attention to details.

Best advice I was ever given was let the animal tell you how you're going to catch it.

BTW, lump me in the not so much category as I just catch the ones that need to be caught, most of the time. LOL

This. Read his second line.
Some talk the talk and some walk the walk. It will take trapping experience on ur part to have some skill at separating them.

I'm talking the best of the best

I'm not the best and may be the worst. But if you pay close attention to sign such as tracks and pay close attention to sights where you catch canine's you'll start seeing a pattern form, habitat, crossings, hunting areas, Denning area ECT. The best canine trappers are going to be the guys that work the hardest and have the most drive, not necessarily the guy/gal that catches the most, because some areas hold a lot more critters than other areas. There may be time's where it takes weeks if not months to catch a pair of stock killers, (Coyote's) so it's really hard to say there's a best , But you can say with some amount of certainly that there are lots of great trappers on this sight. I hope this helps.

Get a subscription to Fur-Fish-Game magazine. Also,,click on Minnesota Trapline Products at the top of this page. Then click on books and videos.Order some of those that deal with the furbearers your interested in trapping.Click on "visit the store" at the bottom of this page.Order Charles Dobbins two books "The Dirthole and Its Variations"and "Variations Of The Flat Set".Those books are packed with information. Then go out and practice making those sets.Expecting everyone in here to just tell you and show you everything comes across as lazy. You have to be willing to do some of your own research and legwork. If you cant do that, you'l never make it as a trapper.

One trait of the great trappers is the ability to see things that are plainly there but aren't seen, if that makes sense.

Ron Jones aka Jonesie is one of those when he spelled out his six phases of the grey squirrel to me. I'm just sitting there going duh. He was laying out the things that I'd seen time and time again but it had never registered to me as a pattern to be used. Seriously walk a line with one of those gooduns and you'll walk away wondering just why your head is up your tail.

What are you hoping to accomplish?

I drove a pickup back and forth a few times in this field and hung snares in the tire tracks. Pretty simple huh.
