I talked to my neighbor yesterday and he said something killed all 8 of his hens in one night.

All were dead

6 were on.location 2 were no where to be found but their was a trail with feathers going over his 4 ft fence.

They roosted in a chicken house but had a run, he didn't secure the door of the house

No tracks? An owl, maybe? Although, would an owl kill all of the chickens and take a couple with it?

Buddy just his own massacre turned out to be a coon.

Red fox have done that to us here in PA. Twice over the years we lost our small flock of 8-12 birds to fox. We've lost individual birds to hawks but when it's a massacre like that it's always fox. They were going over and under a three-foot fence or getting them while they were free-ranging.

We reinforced the pen about four years ago by adding hardware cloth a foot up and a foot out from the base and added bird netting over the top. We stopped free-ranging in the spring and only let them out other times of the year when someone is home and the dogs can be outside.

We haven't lost a bird to predators since.

Not just a coon, a whole pack of em. Momma and 3 or 4 kits. Teaching them to hunt.

Chicken bunch did an online survey once as to what animals were responsible for chicken kills. Coon and neighbors dogs killed more chickens than all other predators combined.

Over 4' fence my suspect pool would be fox, bobcat and coon

Yes. Which is what I thought as soon as i.saw how much was eaten and that thw feahers went over the
fence.


We were.losing a chicken here and there for a while this fall and the first night of trapping season we caught a bobcat on the hill above the house and it stopped.


Jerry said probably a family of coon since they qere inside the hen house.. he said owl at first but the chickens were inside when attacked but ended up all over the pen.

You would think a cat would nail one and be gone with it unlike a coon that goes into a killing spree.

Most of our coon kills they will pull the heads off all of them then come back and get them as they eat them. What ever it is needs to be stopped even if he don't have any left.

I can see mama coon and babies having hiccups and a bunch of feathers coming outta their mouths. Like in the cartoons.

Couple of coons. Fox would take 1 or 2 and not much sign and do it repetitively. I have never seen fox kill a bunch in a night but they just continue to keep coming and I have witnessed them several times carrying them off with not much sign left. Coons just kill and eat and kill more. Owls kill almost always rip the head off and eat it first and usually just 1 a night.

Problem.is these folks are transplants.and don't understand ya gotta kill the culprit
