Do any of you make your own? I honestly didn’t know you could buy them premade! Must have skipped those pages in the catalog. Of course, I had no interest up until now.
I understand that you have to replace the cable after a catch so I’m wondering what would be more cost effective. I still have to wrap my mind around how they are assembled so it may be advantageous to purchase them initially!

I used to make them to order. Id say it depends on how many you use as far as costs effectiveness.... But there also something to be said about making them right and not looking animals. I know all the live market snaresmen I talk to make there own because it's just easier for them to get exactly what they want how they want. Everytime. Loading loop size swivel placement all that.

Also if you shop around you can get better quality parts cheaper from different places

Look at Snareone. He's on here goes by Newt. Tell him what you want, he will fix you up. You might want to buy your first ones.

If you have the bare necessities, cable cutter, hammer, something to hammer on, I did breakdown several years ago

Quote
Just did some numbers. You can make the snares that MTP sells about .60 cents a dozen cheaper(.05 cents a snare). If you buy parts in bulk(im using 1 roll of 100ft cable and per dozen prices for this comparison), you can knock that savings off even more. Assuming you can make a catch with each snare, you can save $10 per dozen. You will have to buy a cable cutter, a good one is $30 dollars, a really good one is $55, economy one is 15.

The break even buying in bulk(5000 ft' of cable from Newt and buying everything buy the hundred) and buying the 30 dollar cutters is about 4 dozen snares.

Your snare per unit price is 2.07, bulk price per unit making your own(includes price of cutters) is 1.56.

prices are probably a tad out of date due to inflation

Yes... Pretty simple to make and can make them pretty premium with some research and good parts..

All you need is a cable cutter a hammer and a nail

Buy a half dozen then you can see what you need and how to put them together to make your own.

Buy your first couple of dozen, and you will have parts to recycle. The breakaway device (BAD) is the hardest to get the release force consistent.

Even though I have everything to make my CRs, I buy all mine from Southern Snare and Supply: 1x19 cable, 350# BAD (WI has a optional #) and added in-line swivel. Make sure you're getting cable restraints that meet the requirements for your state and ask about adding an in-line barrel swivel if allowed.

If/when you buy them make sure they say they are PA legal. Most vendors will specify that.

Eh...wot?

That has been m experience also He has the knowledge to fix up with the rrght gear to fit your needs Locks cables swivels the complete and ready to use H e is a no nonsense guy that has used the gear he makes himself If you want to make your own he also has the necessary tools to go that route You end up putting a good amount of money into those tools however You will ned to build a lot of gear for your own use until you break even with your investment in getting those itemsEitherway you can't reallygo wrong if you enjoy t process and idea that you made them yourself

Newt has a book out now that covers snare making from A to Z.

I bought snares years ago. I then bought a spool of cable to make my own after the original snares were destroyed. Just saved all the usable parts from the old ones. One thing nice you can make them to what ever length works for you.

The email address on his website, shows undeliverable. I didn’t notice any description of a “new” book. Is it the Snaring for Survival?
I also thought I could click on his username (in list). and be able to send him a PM asking, but that failed also.

Never mind, I figured it out
