I degreased mine and dyed them with speed dip, but did not wax them. I use a rat tail file to remove any coating on the jaw that holds the dog and I also clean out the dog notches. Things even get worse when they get wet after a rain. The first years I just dyed them in logwood dye. Started the speed dip about 15 years ago. I don't do them more than about every 5-6 years.

No. But if you want to paint them, then you need to degrease them.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

If you want to paint them, run them through the dishwasher first

….. or run them as is until they take on a light rust then paint

Insert profound nonsense here

Let them hang outside get a light coat of rust and paint or dip.
