So went and bought some decent ammo along with a few 100 primers and a new can of power, for the first time in ...a while. And Lord Threw up in my mouth a little looking. At these prices ! For the amount I shoot and what I want to do is be spending an arm and a leg buying ammo sick heck 40rd of most of this stuff is a pound of most powder. ! sick

On the bright side all the new fangled calibers I'm not supposed to be able to find ammo for are all out the common stuff seems a bit lower but all in all pretty good supply.... Maybe eveyone just plain hot their fill last few panic sessions and folks are haut picking up a extra box or two as a supplement? grin
Anyhow just waiting on some more parts to come in so I can see what this stuff does before reloads

I'm glad that I've been reloading for over 30 years and have a good supply of Expendables.
But I still have to buy a little of this or that now and again. I had to buy a pound of Varget last weekend, about fell over. It was $69 plus tax.

It's not going to get any cheaper either.
Alliant is no longer making powder for civilian use, military only.

Most powder has gone up around 40-50% in about 2-3 years. I have watched it climb. Large rifle primers have about doubled if you can find them along with all primers.

What prompted me to resume reloading after long break was events that took place about 3 years ago. Had been in a Bass Pro looking for 308 ammo.......had a full isle that looked like what Wolfie shows in that picture. Piled from floor to head high.........just about anything you could want. Went back 6 months later and only ammo in store was a few single boxes of 22lr CCI birdshot. Bare shelves had been restocked with some kind off fluff that was not ammo or reloading supplies. And it stayed that way for nearly a year.

Decided then and there it was time to go back to reloading. Prices and supply now locked in for life.

The retailers found out that not only will people pay it, but will go crazy hoarding and stockpiling.

Those of us that stockpiled found out retailers can't be counted on when the chips are down. They are captive to the guys that make the stuff and distributors. Alliant being the most recent example.

Get yourself a decent sized stash and none of that matters anymore.

And to think of the battles that has been fought with charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter. I guess the price has gone up, must be supply and demand market.

In fact I have read that the same combination coal, sulfur and potash was all stirred up by an earthquake and maybe set off by lightning was what caused the fireworks at the Dead Sea and rained down fire and brimstone.

And the Chinese got the credit for inventing gunpowder, lol.

I thought powder had at least doubled since the covid shortages.

I recently bought a 10mm auto. FMJ ammo can be had for 40 cents when bought by the thousand. Reloading the brass would cost me over 32 cents each, hardly worth the time and effort. Most rifle cartridges are a different matter, but not 5.56 that is produced in bulk. It used to be the cost of a bullet was the major cost to reload a cartridge and the cost of powder and primer was insignificant. Now the primer plus powder cost is as much or more than the bullet. To me it means the ammo mfgs are getting powder and primers at much lower prices than reloaders.

Been reloading since the '80s.
Only thing I currently reload is off caliber CF rifles and revolver ammo.
Components make common calibers cost prohibitive vs sale prices

I reload, hard to find the old calibers and I like doing it. I guess Iam a "hoarder", been buying stuff since forever, just ran out of pistol primers that hurts buying at these prices!

I like the versatility. Load whatever I want for the task at hand. No more sighting in with one factory load then trying to find more so you dont have to shoot something new. You figure out the new ammo, only have a few left then do it all again. Spend a ton of money trying different factory stuff only to find the one you like is not available when you need more. Its all a money game. I have a few powders that serve multiple purpose. Been able to work up something for all the centerfires I own that works. I don't shoot competition so dime size groups isn't a concern.

Try finding .40/44, cowboy loads are $78/50
Home cast 00buck, in a Remington hull and figure 8 wad with a Cheddite primer, a sprinkle of Green Dot.

Want hunting rounds?

.28 / round.

.243 (6mm) that performs at range?
105 grain Hornady V max at 3k fps for .23/ round.

Getting the “stash” is what caused the mess in the first place

Chukar - Can you break out the price with todays components for your .243 load? Primer alone is .10-.12 for what I have seen and cheapest Hornady bullet around .27 - not sure what powder, brass, and equipment going for.

I recently got setup to reload. A friend was quitting and gave me a fair amount of equipment but I still spent ALOT of $ on equipment. Like north of a thousand dollars. Unless you shot alot the savings are not that great if you figure in the equipment. If you buy all your expendables now maybe 20 years from now it might look cheap.

40 so grains of H7828 is going to run around 32 cents for a 243. Brass is going to be 30 cents to $1.20 depending on what kind you buy. Good hunting bullets will be upwards a buck apiece.

I did it because I want to know that me and my boys will have ammo in 40 years but it takes a lot of $ to get setup with equipment and supplies to be there. Unless you shot alot of have several thousand to get setup for reloading I figure your better off just stocking up on loaded ammo when u can find good deals on it. It is fun seeing how much accuracy you can squeeze out of a rifle though

We are set up with everything just can't do it near the price that was stated at .23 and I will always listen to better options but I also see you state it costs about a buck a piece not counting any equipment cost.
