Speed Dip vs spray paint? What are the advantages of using Speed Dip over spray paint. Just Speed Dip is just another $13 outta my wallet and I need every dime I can get.

I speed dipped a bunch of traps years ago. I really don't know if I like it. Works ok for my water traps I would say. For now on everything gets spray painted. Quick and easy. This just my thoughts others will disagree.

At $4-8 a can of spray paint, the speed dips MUCH cheaper!

I’ve never been able to get as much done with rattle cans as I can dipping.

Plus the coverage is superior on dipped stuff.

I tried speed dip back in the 80's and seemed to take forever for the scent to dissipate, so went back to logwood & waxing. Tried it again in the early 2000's, same thing. I've been painting the past 15 years, but I dip rather than spray in a Rustoleum & Acetone dip. It works for me. A couple things I've learned now, is #1 I do miss the tradition of logwood & waxing, and #2 the residual scent from speed dip does leave in time, and probably bothered me more than the canines.

If you are going to paint a trap - dip it in paint.... Spray painting is cost prohibitive, like Boone said, for any quantity. If you do 1-2 doz., traps with limited facilities, I can see where your lean is toward a spray can. As far as durability goes, Speed Dip is superior to spray paint but again, a few traps for 2-3 weeks of trapping, then the can is a good way to go. All my water traps and BG's get a petroleum dip of some sort and if used in neutral pH water, dip coating will last for 3-5 years of moderate fur trapping. Dipped paint goes on all my snares for color coding their diameters and it lasts for 5 years of fur trapping if stored high and dry in the off season. I think most of us who have been doing this for many years, use a protective covering that will last past a single year as we are always an optimist for "next year" and want our gear to last. My experience. ................... the mike

I speed dip water stuff.

I paint dip cat stuff.

I spray paint snares (I don’t necessarily want full coverage here).

I still boil and wax canine stuff as it’s the only coating that can be used the day after treatment.

Oh and I do speed dip snare stakes and supports (the ground portion at least, wire portion gets camo paint) as it’s a durable coating that lasts 2-4 years for that use.

I tried paint for my 330s but it sucks doing a couple dozen. Holds up OK, but takes forever, finger gets sore, bloody expensive and in the end you find out you missed spots. When I tried Speed dip, the traps were tacky all summer. I’m never using it again, but some have great results. This summer I used F1 & a quick dip in FMJ. Fast and easy. Big pot with die & wax would be my next method. Tried and true.

Go pick up some free walnuts, sumac berry clusters or maple leaves and boil your traps.

I think your over thinking this. Get your traps as clean as you can and use them just like that. 1/ 2" of dirt over them and your good to go.

I've caught a lot of coyotes In non treated traps.

Spray painting (rattle can) isn't the most efficient method, but works in a pinch. I paint dip all my traps (paint/acetone mix). On my water traps, I may secondary camo spritze them with the rattle can.

Let me make this simple, paint will fall off on some areas and the speed dip seems to soak in to the metal and hold up to the abuse. I mostly paint tho cause it’s what I have

Most petroleum dips use Coal Tar as a base ingredient. If it is "tackie" after 2 days of drying in the sun you will need to thin your mix (its too concentrated and acts like the tar base). You can thin the original mix and redip as the gas/thinner or whatever you used and give them a minute or two to soak in the new (less concentrated) mixture. It will dissolve the original coating and you will have a much thinner coat when you pull them out. AND since it is a petroleum product, you will gain a small amount of lubrication at the contact points of the metal. Won't last for the season but it will for a few resets after a catch. My experience. ............................the mike
