For those who make their own, does the sand get lumpy after it has cooled?

I’ve made 20-30 gallons of it over the years. If you let it cool on cardboard and stir it as it cools, it won’t clump

Never too old to learn

Yes, sand is more prone to getting lumpy and setting up then plane dirt. They both can set up from bouncing around in a trapping vehicle.
One of the important steps when making waxed dirt. Is to keep turning/agitating the sand until it cools off enough to store in containers. Then leave the lid open for a few days?
I normally make one 35 gal. batch per day. Solar method. Let it cool all night, then put it in storage containers the next morning when cool. July is a good month to make waxed dirt before the days get to short and the sun angle changes.

I do much the same. If you have to you can run your waxed sand through your sifter to remove the lumps.

One reason the sand gets more lumpy is you do not need as much wax with the sand. I use nearly half for sand then I do with regular dirt.

I make about 120 gallons per year.

For cooling five gallons at a time, I use 6 five gallon pails. 1 gallon in each one leaving 1 empty. About every 5 minutes I dump from bucket to bucket. I get very little if any clumping with this process. If I do then I sift it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. First time making waxed sand for me. Good to know I'm not the only one this happens to.

I make about 150 gallons a year. I dump the warm mix on a sheet of plywood with a 2x2 screwed on all the way around. As it's cooling, I use a tine rake and keep raking until it's cooled. Eliminates most of the problem. I use a cheapo mixer that holds 5 gallons. Can usually make my supply in a weekend.

Just made up 50 gal this past wk. Been real hot here. Use those black sleds they use for pullin deer on. Put sand in and wax on top. Let ur heat and mix. More wax. Works good but got to be above 90. Mixer works well too. Neighbor thinks me crazy waxing dirt.

If it gets lumpy, stir a little more vigorously as its cooling like everyone said,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, BUT ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, remember, its SAND and it won't absorb much like regular soils with a silt - clay - organic matter content. If clumping occurs after mixing, stirring and storage, then there may be too much wax in the mix. Lighten the ratio on the next batch. My experience. ......................the mike

Not sure about the solar method, but with a mixer, the best ratio is 1 pound wax to 5 gallons of sand. Need to keep stirring until cool, then clumping will be minimal.

Helps to cover your container with glass to magnifie as well as hold in the heat.

I spread it out thin on a tarp in the shade to cool and go get the next batch started. Try to rake it around a time or two as it cools but don't worry about it much. Yeah it clumps but it isn't that hard and most of it breaks right up as I am scooping it up. I set a piece of expanded metal on top of a five gallon bucket and scoop the sand through it after it cools, what doesn't break into fine sand on its own I grab and and crush with clean gloves (I use clean gloves to handle all the sand and wax as I make it) and let it sift down through the expanded metal. The expanded metal sifts out any small rocks ,etc (I use beach sand I shovel off of the river beaches). Then I dump each five gallon bucket in the clean trash cans I use to store my waxed sand.

It was a 109 here today. I think I’ll give this a shot! Thanks for the idea!

I used my sifter with 1/4" holes and that worked well.
