I’m trying to catch some red fox but foot traps are out due to laws snares a last resort due to dogs. Just wondering if anyone has any luck catching them in cage traps and what lures, baits work best. Thanks

Not really. A few pups over the years, always in a positive set when the den is under a structure.

When you can’t catch them for whatever reason, noise harassment works well.

Yep greys and bobcats don’t mind going in them. Had one work it this morning but wouldn’t commit to enter. I will be setting some big enough to catch a fifty pound hog in. If that doesn’t work then I’ll just have too set some snares..thanks for reply’s

Have caught more grays than Reds, the Grays are more aggressive, have to make the cage is solid to the ground & bottom covered with dirt. like limestone says, harassment works wonders

Fried chicken bones and grape jam. Don't laugh. Try it (after you get done laughing).
Works in the summer better than any other time. Might be due to the extra demand for feeding pups.

Are suitcase traps a thing in north America?
They are called Kofferfallen here. As they are open on 3 sides they are more likely to catch red fox than box traps.

They are made of two rectangles from boards. On the backside hinges between the rectangels.
Bottom and top are closed with heavy wire mesh.
The bottom part is dug into the soil almost completely, only some mm edge remaining above ground.
The larger the trap, the better.

For fox the trigger pan should be dusted with dirt.
The iron rod from the pan to the mechanism schould be covered with dirt.
Bait is placed on and below the trigger pan.
Be carefull regarding scent. Use cloves when baiting and handling the mechanism.
