By boat or by airplane, I used to spend considerable time searching the banks of the Kuskokwim.Yukon,
Innoko, and various other rivers in Alaska for mammoth bones. Found a few tusks as well, but never photographed them as I always sold them to afford airplane repairs and maintenance. It was certainly a lucrative and interesting pasttime.

This is a toe bone.

This is a molar. They were fairly common.

A neck vertebrae.

Hard to tell size but this was a tibio-fibula from a mammoth.

They've only been ext5inct for about 10,000 years ( end of the pleistocene), so there are quite a few bones scattered about.

Always been neat to read about the findings and see photos of them. Thank you, Jack.

Off the subject a little but have you ever found a Clovis or Folsom point while looking for bones Gulo?

I love the dark brown colour of the old bones and skulls.
Look so much richer than the plain common white bones/skulls.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I like that colour too, Boco.

I especially love those huge sweeping curled up and inward tusks. I try to imagine that beastie strolling towards me.

Ever been to the Palisades, Jack? Otherwise known as the boneyards? Yukon R. down from Tanana.
Did you know Roland Quimby? He used to buy Ivory in western Alaska. He would fly the Colville sometimes, looking for bones, Ivory.
Norton bay is known for finding tusks. Seen an almost full tusk that came out of the Cape Denbigh area. West wind storms that hit the coast south of Koyuk often expose mammoth Ivory. Have seen piles of tusks and tusk pieces in Koyuk.
Popular material for knife handles.

Didn’t one of the Sackett’s kill one of the last mammoth’s in the lower 48? My dad has a custom knife with a handle from mastadon.
