I'm just trying to see what your guys favorite bait and lures are.

I know I know, my location is different from your guyes so they will work different for me. But im sure if one coyote or fox likes a lure another will. I'm not sure if I posted this yet or not but I just want to get a good list down.

I know there is no secret bait or lure that's gonna get every single coyote and fox but there is good ones.

And are any of these lures or baits good? I have these handy currently:

Also in my area there's a trapper that says he used sheep's wool and it didn't help him at all, but he said Q-Tips had great success. He is within miles of me and he caught a fair share of fox and yotes

Dobbins lures are great.

The best bait you can use is the carcasses from the animals you catch and hunt.
Same with urine or lure.
Early season-rat rabbit grouse fish,later on Beaver meat shines.Canine carcasses or parts of them hold various attractions to their own kind,can be used like a lure moreso than a bait.Cat carcasses are both a lure and bait for other cats and some other furbearers.Rat carcasses will also lure rats and attract mink and other predators.
You can make a lot of different lure from castor,rat musk mink musk weasel musk otter musk,fish oil and some other commonly available ingredients in various formulations.
Castor is better when aged for a couple years.

I have had success with Hoosier trapper supplies lures and baits.

Most of the ones you listed should work fine also.

You still haven’t learned to read yet…
You have all those and didn’t catch, then it’s not the lures or baits fault.
Learn to find sign and set on it. If you’re on sign you’ll catch. There’s no magic formula or sets. Pick one lure and one set and set on sign.

Test them with a camera on the hole
The animals will tell you which one is good and which one is bad
We learn from the animals reaction to a particular lure or bait
Your animals may vary

All those are good, quality lures and baits that will catch. But as others have tried to nail down, setting on sign is the most important aspect. You can't just go out in any old field, put a dirt hole in and get discouraged if the traps sits empty. Likely in that scenario the set is in a place where the animals just aren't moving through.

What I would recommend is to start walking places you have permission to trap. Get familiar with the layout of the land. Look for pinch points that say: "animals HAVE GOT to cross through here". Crossings over drainage ditches, gaps in overgrown fence rows, washouts in fields, intersections of multiple trails, etc

As far as sheep's wool "not working" ???. It has 3 functions in my mind. Smell appeal, eye appeal, and holds whatever lure/bait you apply to it. Make sure it's stuffed down deep in the hole. You want whatever is investigating it to have to work at it. Don't just let some coon or fox stroll up to the set and rob you blind because the wool was at the rim of the dirt hole

Here is my recommendation. Maybe start out with 6-12 good coyote traps and 6-12 DPs. You have to think about how much time you will have that you can devote to checking and maintaining those sets. If you are on foot, and go to school then I'd say a line in the 12-24 set range would be a good starting point. Get your traps out and practice making dirt holes. Practice on getting that trap absolutely solid when bedded. It's better to learn this now in your yard rather than a field in late November, and it will help you be more efficient during trapping season because you will have the experience of making the sets.

Also, is there any opportunity around you for muskrat, beaver, mink? Beaver and otter trapping is what got me hooked. I've had good years on coyotes since, but honestly I enjoy water trapping so much more. Coyotes stink, and I have a more difficult time with fur handling on them compared to the water furbearers. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to see a coyote bouncing around in a catch circle, but go out on a beaver line and start pulling in drowning rods and wires with 50-60lb beaver and 20 lb otters on the end of them and that's hard to beat

I'm not big into commercial baits and lures. However I do used Gusto as an LDC.
Your profile states your a dairy farmer, groundhogs make great bait. Are you an avid hunter? Save the offalls from squirrels and rabbits.
Deer liver works well for me as well. Use the resources you have available and save the $ for more traps.

All those should work if used properly. Gusto I like to use up high as a long range type call lure. Cavens makes good baits though I have not used that one. I think I might have a jar of it in my bait fridge. I also like Kaatz bros. Red label bait for k-9’s. I use sheep’s wool some down the hole to help baits from drying out and scent being lost into the dirt.
I can only imagine what your first trap checks are going to be like this year. Most likely better than any Christmas morning looking at fur rather than a present. Hopefully you will be off of your 3 post per day by then and post many pictures of catches.

Young man, I try to follow your posts but I'm not on here everyday. It's hard to keep up.

There is no secret lure or bait for catching canines. I've caught em on just about anything and everywhere. I've caught them in pocket sets with a fish head in the hole and fish oil up on the bank. Would I use that as my go to for canines? No, just sayin.

I know you've been told to read the archives. Read the ones on location, set construction and trap bedding. They will serve yousaying.

I have never been disappointed in anything made by Russ Carmen or Asa Lennon. I suspect the current owner of Lennons is doing a fine job. Asa trained him.

Ur going go have figure this one out on your own kid because your going to get every answer in the book. Few things to keep in mind when asking questions
1 statistically speaking half the trappers are below average skill wise and half thr trappers are above average.
2 everyone's bench mark for good is different. When I started I had lures or baits I thought were good because they were catching a few coyotes for me. Today I wouldn't use those lures and baits because my standards of performance are higher

Used LENON'S in 1973 in college, still using it... looks and smells the same to me 50 years later. It was suggested by the son of a county control fox trapper in Augusta Co., VA. He made his living with it.
Carman's Canine Call and Junes Fox Frenzy always with me now too... I never use bait, a squirt of bladder urine down the hole on remakes.

I have caught more coyotes in my life using Russ Carmens K-9 call. It is good stuff!

Blackies Fur King has always been a favorite bait of mine. Smells so sweet I would eat it myself!
Good on a variety of critters.
As far as lure, Dunlap’s Coyote Riot has proven results for me for raccoon for some reason ….messin up my fox sets. Milligan Tutti Fruity is a nice lure for DP’s to get them in close. Very sweet!
My new fav which won my fox this last season is High Country Lures Bonanza Cold. I won it as a prize when I “found the fox” in the Furtaker magazine.

I would recommend a producer that is close to where you trap.

You will find 2 words that have no use for a trapper. Always and never. what works for one person may well be borderline useless for the next. Good luck in your quest and never loose the fire in the belly.

In all do respect Cathryn I got into trapping less then 10 years, I've asked a few questions and have gotten good advice from good trappers here and there but 95% of the information you need to know to start catching animals is there if u just do some reading. I know because I've done it. Trapping takes determination and problem solving skills. Lot of kids noways have had everything given to them on a silver platter and we are starting to see the consequences of that. With that said I've given this kid good advice several times. But I've also called him out when he's got maybe a little carried away or started getting a little big in his stories. I don't believe just handing everything to the next generation and coddling them is going to save trapping. Trapping comes down to liking challenges and if don't like over coming challenges your probably not going to stick with trapping very long. Sometimes with the younger generation it's hard to tell whether it's enthusiasm or liking the attention.

And remember he got put on restriction by a very patient administration on this website for a reason, it wasn't just because a couple grumpy people thought he was crossing a line
