I've seen refusal to enter the catch circle only once and that was after catching what I felt was a dominate coyote, he was very vocal when i pulled up to the set and didn't cower down.

In sand my remakes end up being totally relandscaped into a modified walkthrough with a sand ridge backing.

I like the old cow pie backing, natural and portable.

I've drilled and put 1/4" tapcons through 4 or 5 links of chain in rocks that size

I like a rock with some sort of feature on it. Makes it easier to keep up with previous lure placement.

Savel, I guess I never paid attention to the sex of first one caught at sets and then what I caught at the remake. Interesting thread. I do LOVE remakes though, they just seem to get better and better for me. I do not move or replace the trap unless it is damaged. I just reuse same bed, same hole or post, and remake the set. Bait works well for me at remakes. There already a ton of pee and poo, coyote slobber, and wet dog smell at the sets so I don’t use more urine or gland lure unless I apply something not coyote…like a fox gland or a fox pee. But for dirtholes I just rebait and reset.
I think I mentioned before I generally run two sets at a location. One is a post, other is a dirthole with bait. I remake the set to what is was originally.
Once in a while if I have a dirthole set that sits forever and the bait doesn’t seem to be interesting to coyotes there. I will jab a stick into the dirthole and give it a shot of pee, turning the dirthole into a post set. I don’t touch the trap. That has worked more than a few times for me. It’s a trick I learned from Carrol Black so he deserves the credit.
Remakes are awesome and thanks man for starting this thread.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

We don’t have rocks like that down here but we do have charred fat lighter we pick up. In areas my son finds tracks he’ll set them out at least a couple weeks before setting and add a lure or urine. He’ll keep an eye on tracks and see if they avoid or notice the new addition. By the time my son sets, he’ll set the ones that still have tracks which means they’re used to the intrusion and he can rack up pretty quick. For every log set he’ll put a dirt hole across from it. Don’t know why but he’s never caught a coyote double, but tons of cat/coyote doubles. The cat is always in the dirt hole and the coyote is always on the log.

Our ground here is loaded with rocks like that. I usually find them about 12 inches down with an 18" stake.

Thanks for this thread, lots of ideas to try out this coming season.

Good point. Just about every boat landing has those. I thought you was picking them up while trapping.

Here I can't move in things like a bigger rock or log or skull without starting to get too many refusals. I even tested it and seen it on camera. I like a nice step down (not trench) set at a remake no backing needed. I've had years though where remakes aren't worth using. Years where our numbers are down it seems from sickness getting the pups.

Down here we burn regularly and are loaded with pines. They see it everywhere. We’re just using it where we want to set.

I struggled last year setting remakes. Early in the season was mostly males caught. I did catch a male in a remake inside a catch circle in February after catching a male first. I found I had better luck moving just outside the catch circle about 5 feet and making a new set. My most productive spot I caught 7 and none were inside a catch circle.

I get that, we have lots of rocks here and sticks and even lots of cow skeletons laying around in pastures that they see regularly but if I import one to use for a set it makes too many coyotes skittish for me.

I’ve never paid attention to the sex either. I remake all my trap rings and have caught over 20 in the same spot, but if you want to catch them all move it outside the ring.

This is a great thread! Lots of useful information here that I learned. Thank you all.

Where I am, 60% of the coyotes I trap; don't have any urine in their bladder when I go to collect it. I may be able to squeeze a few drops out, but for the most part there ain't none.
The other 40% will have a full or partially full bladder, and that is what I try to collect. I don't know why that is, but most of the coyotes I catch are empty. I assume cause their pissing on everything in the catch circle.
Regardless, I check them all after killing them and can usually collect enough to get by when I want to use some good urine at a set.

Nearly every bobcat I catch is full urine.
