Do any of you guys store your chest freezers outside?

I’m thinking about moving my chest freezers out of the garage and building a lean to shelter to keep the rain and sun off them.

Does this work?

Do the freezers struggle in 90 degree heat outside? Wondering if dust and mice cause problems on them being left outside too.

I don’t want to do this if the freezers breakdown after a year or two though.

I’m trying to find a way to make some room in my garage. Thanks!

Lot of older folks had theirs on back porch In fact before AC that’s why they had them outside made house too hot.
If it ninety outside then it’s 110 in that garage. Should be fine if protected from the rain

I've had one in the shed for years. <20's to >90's. I had one die on me a few years back, but it was used when I got it.

I have 6 in a metal shop. Gets hot in their daily in late spring, summer, early fall here.

Is it as good as a cool place...probably not, but they don't run much once frozen and the lid isn't continuously opened.

My local tavern (bar) has 2 outside. One for bags of ice, one for food. Has a lean to over them. Sun/ rain protected.
No complaints from them.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

We run 5 freezers and ran out of room indoors so have had 2 in an unheated garage for about 5 years with no problems.

If it gets below freezing in winter, make sure the compressor is built for that. Some new freezers have compressor lubrication that fails in cold weather.

I have 2 freezers in my garage

they are inside the attic is vented with a good ridge vent I had cut in when the tin roof went on but on a 90 degree day it is every bit of 90 inside just not in also in the sun

I got one from a guy down the street about 8 years ago who had it in his garage for around 15 years and his daughter moved out he said he needed the garage space more than the spare freezer so I picked it up

the other was in my grandparents basement 1984 till 2012 and been in my garage since

no problems with either of them.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Thanks for the replies!

I’m going to get something setup and built outside to hold them. Hope they survive the winter here also!

If business picks up, they hope to add indoor plumbing one day too. smile

I have stored chest freezers outside the garage for a month or so in the Fall and never had any issues. I have 2 that are strictly for Elk hunting and are dirty, rusted and beat to heck but they always work. As someone else said, leaving them sealed up is important too.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I had an old ues one outside on the back porch for years it worked great until it finally went out and I dind not notice for a long time in the summer. It had coyotes and fox in it . Let's just say when I found out the lid got duck taped and a strap choked around it and hooked to my truck and drug out in the woods. It got tiped over and lid bent with a gap in the process . I left it out there tell the next summer and there was nothin left but bones and some hair before I took it off for junk.

It will work fine mie was not covered was old and gibmven to us when we got it and lasted for years outside uncovered.

They make ones that are labeled "Garage Ready"
This is to take in account for hot and cold temperatures.
I have had a new fridge and freezer fail in my basement, bought a garage ready one and I've been good for 3 years so far.

Yes, the new ones need to be labeled garage ready or something like that. They’re more expensive or are around here.

I had a small costco freezer in an unheated sunroom for years with no problems, temps down to zero, outside at least, I just bought a "garage ready" model for crab bait, it's in a shed outside, no overheating inside the shed but it is in the shade. I think as long as you keep the weather off them they should be ok. maybe keep some mouse poison behind it...I always keep some in the shed.

You should put a heat tape around the compressor so it doesn’t slug liquid refrigerant . Especially a newer freezer .

The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

I have 3 outside, that is how we have had them since I was a kid. Freezer alarms are cheap insurance if you are not going to be walking by them every day.
