Thanks to the efforts of my parents to put good food on the table........and my own ingenuity as an adult.....thankfully never been that hungry. Anyplace that serves snails serves something better.

Always order them on a cruise because if I don’t like it I can always order something else. After about 6 times trying them, I still don’t like them. Slow learner

I first had escargot in 1976, when I was 6 years old. They were cooked by my parent's friend Michel, whose dad was a well known French chef. Michel worked for Snecma, designing jets with GE. He was a great guy, but might not have been the best chef, because I don't remember ever liking anything he cooked. I was somewhat grossed out by eating the snails and may not have given them a fair chance. He also made frog legs, which I really like, but did not like when he made them.
The second time I ate snails, I was at Mitchell's Fish Market in Columbus, as a shared appetizer. They were decent but nothing compared to the rest of the meal, which was in the top two restaurant meals I have had. I had scallops with goose pate and bacon on top with asparagus, that were fantastic.
The third time I ate snails, my brother Nick cooked them on New Year's Day. They were good, but not as good as the multitude of other food we enjoyed.

Ate many in philippines and italy. Trick is cleaning them. To me they taste like the big chunk of marrow in chicken. You have to squeeze the muck out. Cleaned many That’s the mistake most places make, my ex had the knack for making them I always thought they tasted like cashews myself, more then once we went fishing only to return with a bucket of lake snakes when the fish weren’t biting I could not get passed diggin it out of the shell !
But I don't eat things that grovel in the mud !!! So then no clams, mussels or oysters then or shrimp crayfish ext For that matter most snails I have seen have been on vegetation or shoreline boulders not in the mud

Escargot is great, just a bunch of butter and garlic.
In Nigeria, I've eaten giant land snails. They are as big as your hand. Well cooked and well seasoned. I will have them again.
Did you have to gut and clean? .

I spent some time in France and really enjoyed the snails there. The trick is the snail needs to be kept on a bread crumb diet for quite a while to purge all the nasties out of its system.
I've always thought that snails would be an awesome pizza topping.

I had then a couple of times, and liked them. They are basically just a slug without the shell. We have lots of slugs, I've heard the black ones are the best eating. I think you have to wash them with vinegar or something to get the slime off of them before you gut them. Might try them some time.

I will let you know how they make as table fare...

Conchs and whelks are salt water big snails, they're ok if not cooked too long, the Chinese clean and slice the meat thin, put it in a strainer ladle and lower in boiling water for 10 seconds, cooked but tender. Italians put them "in da sauce", lol We also have Periwinkles here, marble size black snails that eat seaweed and other marine growth, you steam them with garlic and butter and pick the meat out with toothpicks, they taste ok, but you can't fill up on them, you'd have to eat pounds of them.... Never ate land snails, we have a variety here about the size of a quarter thats brown with yellow stripes. I guess you can eat them.

They were called golden cohol. The govt started them with the farmers to grow for food because they were very large.
