In the fall, I helped a friend's mother by photographing and cataloging her late husband's firearms collection. He was a very good gunsmith who loved building traditional flintlock rifles while working at a living history museum in their gunsmith shop. As a thank you for helping her (her kids have no clue about old guns), she sold me one of his beautiful flintlock rifles. I am stoked!!

Problem is, I would like to get this rifle to my new residence in New Mexico to try and take some game with it. Nobody seems to make a rifle case that is long enough for this gun. I know there are some flintlock enthusiasts here, how do you transport a rifle that is 60+" long? From what I can tell, nobody makes a case that long. My family is coming out here in September, just in time for deer and elk season, and would love to have them bring it. I suppose I could build a shipping crate here, ship it home, have my son pack and seal it up real good and ship it back to me, but I am not thrilled about that idea.

Any advice would be appreciated, as I am out of ideas.

That's a pretty rifle. Most folks I know just use a blanket sleeve/rifle cover. Look at October Country, Track of the Wolf, Crazy Crow, or other vendor that caters to the reenactment community. Just put it some where in the travel vehicle where it is safe without other stuff piled on top of it.

Simple to sew up a blanket sleeve. If trying to ship a heavy cardboard tube from inside a carpet roll works

Build the case and install a padlock at each end if you want to fly with it.

Big difference between hard and soft case. Hard case, pretty much DIY is the only route. Frame in 2x4's with plywood sides.
Soft cases are pretty simple to make. Decoration can be nothing to ornate. Buckskin, blanket wool, or canvas all work. My mom has made padded, quilted cases for most of my long rifles

Thanks. Jim was real artist. His 3 kids took 50 or so guns that they had wanted before I got the call. He had 2 mint-looking palm pistols among a bunch of other European guns that were liberated in the late 1940's. It really was fun visiting him at the museum and talking with him, when I wasn't hanging out with my wife who worked there also.

I was thinking the wooden crate route would be my best bet. I trap = I'm poor. I thought about 6" PVC tube, wrapped in several wool blankets so it cant move around, then sealed back up really good might work. USPS estimate is about $ 125.00 to ship it out here, do not want to ask my lovely bride to deal with trying to get it on a plane (Southwest will accept it for about the same price as shipping USPS.)

Ace gun cases are very well built. Made in the USA. I have a few for my long rifles. Look under goose gun on there website.

I bought a flintlock from Jackie Brown, he wrapped the gun in multiple layers of bubble wrap then put that in a heavy duty cardboard box he made and taped the box securely and then put a second layer of card board and taped that securely. The packaging was relatively light weight but I believe I could have dropped it off the roof onto concrete and it would not have been damaged. Obviously the gun arrived completely I damaged. He shipped it by UPS if I remember correctly
