Dog Days of Summer are here. No hunting seasons currently open where I live. Time for a good read.

1. Old Man and the Boy - probably the 10th time...
2. Where the Red Fern Grows - always a good read
3.Any Steinbeck; notably "Sweet Thursday"

Whatcha reading?

Jack.

JUST finished The Island Within. By Nels. Really liked it. Between work, and other appointments, It took me a while, but I finished it yesterday evening. I don't think there's another book like it.

I just downloaded on Kindle Nels next book, " Raven's Witness; the Alaska Life of Richard K. Nelson ". I'm looking forward to that.

Before I begin that, I've had also in my Kindle, Pete Hegseth's book , " The War on Warriors". A great man , veteran , who describes the Marxist woke war on modern military and his own experiences . It has been a tremendous seller.

After these, I'll probably choose another one of Nels books.

I cannot thank you enough for your gift from your own collection, from Nels. I never dreamed to read such an account of complete awareness of the natural world , the written word illustrations used , attempting to meld in such longing, tearing at contrasting lifestyles . Seeing life from both lenses. I feel he was in the perfect place to balance the two.

I read "Of Mice and Men" annually, usually in the winter. Another that I enjoy and it is actually more a compilation of short stories (with some "fish tales" mixed in) is "He-ll I was there" by Elmer Keith. If you are a gun guy and can deal with some exaggeration, it is a good read. Lots of stories about the Salmon/Selway country in there.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Some great reads coming up.160, "Of Mice and Men" is an annual read of mine, too, usually in the winter. Sharon, I suspect you'll love Raven's Witness. Nels was a one-of-a-kind observer, writer, and gentleman. I really miss him.

The Old Man and the Boy might be my favorite book of all time. I've read it three times now. I've grown fond of repeating some of the Old Man's sayings and words of wisdom to new, young hunters when they join me and the dogs for the first time.

Where the Red Fern Grows s another all-time favorite.

Thanks to your recommendation Sweet Thursday is now on my list. I should probably reread Cannery Row first though.

I think I've recommended this one before but, for anyone who hasn't read it, The Last of the Gentlemen Adventurers : Coming of Age in the Arctic by Edward Beauclerk Maurice is an excellent autobiography about life with the Inuit and service to the Hudson Bat Company. It's really a very interesting book.

Martentrapper, those two books are on my list also . Jack and Ken told me about them , so seems I have a line up when im done with the next two planned . There is yet another one that is rarely read from Nels , that I’d like to access someday, called Heart and Blood.

Someday, I need to read Atlas Shrugged , too.

Surely the list would not be complete without this classic (because it was written by ME.....!)

If you don't have your very own copy yet, pm me and will happily let you know how you can easily acquire your own autographed copy. Btw, price is the same everywhere, but if one sells on Amazon, I only make $2.31 royalty! So order directly from me and support me in my retirement! Luckily I don't need to survive on book sales and Social Security, but still....!

Every year, about this time, I read Traplines North by Stephen W. Meader and Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper by E. N. Woodcock. For several years my wife and I went to the area of Nakina, ON which is the area of Canada written about in Traplines North. Unfortunately, the lodge we go to there is booked pretty solid and we haven't been able to go the last couple of years. At the end of Sept. we travel to the area of Pa. that Fifty Years is written about. It gets me fired up about the upcoming trapping season and I get to see some great country.

Tigrero by Sasha Seimel, it is mainly about jaguar hunting in South America, but has a lot of other stories mixed in.
