I was told a longtime ago that if you order fish it was carp. Now there is nothing wrong with carp in Japan it is highly desired, but in the US it is a trash fish. Don;t know the difference if there is one......jk

The same fish can have several common names. So there’s very little regulation regarding what a restaurant calls a particular type of fish. Honestly, the odds you were eating true walleye 10 years ago is fairly unlikely. There has been very little commercial fishing for walleye for quite some time. I think the vast majority would have been out of Canada on Erie, but most of Erie commercial fishing was and still is yellow perch.

Here in the U.P. you still get the real deal with Great Lakes fish but some places will pull a fast one.Years ago I was working in Munising and my wife and I went out on Friday for a fish fry,we ordered their perch.Nastiest tasting fish we ever had, found out they were serving ocean perch not lake perch, they left out the "ocean" part when they advertised perch. LOL that brings back an unpleasant memory. One day when I was a kid the local grocery store seafood counter was selling ocean perch. We usually bought haddock from the grocery store, but when I saw perch I suggested to my mom that we try that as we loved yellow perch. I figured it would taste similar. My gosh was that stuff awful! Totally agree on the nastiest tasting fish I've ever had!
Proudly banned from the NTA.
Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

I'm surprised the sea Sheppard hasn't been sunk yet! It would make good fish habitat. They are not as terrorist as they started. I do like that they patrol for commercial fishing vessels (mostly out of china) illegally raping "our oceans".

This is off topic but there are a few places in Japan that serve raw chicken, sashimi style. As long as it is fresh it is perfectly safe. They have a different “standard” than westerners do and it doesn’t mean it is wrong. One day I would love to visit Tokyo, Ogawa, and the like. Extreme culture shock I’m fairly certain the salmonella risk with chicken is due to how its butchered and packaged commercially in huge numbers. Thats why duck can be eaten rare, its done on a much smaller scale.

You will only find Crappie/catfish/spoonbill in my freezer. We do gig sucker and red horse during the fall/winter, but only eat them fresh. Do occasionally eat a smallmouth/largemouth if it was hooked too deep and I felt it wasn’t going to make it.
Perch/goggle eye get ate fresh.
