Ok, remember the meteor showers last weekend? Well, I walked into my pole building and noticed a new LED light before I turned anything on. I am like great, someone shot a hole through my roof. I get a ladder to see the angle it took going through the metal. Um, straight down with even tear tabs on the metal all around the hole. The size of a dime. Then two and a half feet below the hole where romex for my lights was running along the truss the meteorite grazed it and ripped/burnt the insulation off but missed the conductors. Then it must have bounced off the concrete and went wherever in my building. Crazy Glad it wasn't through my truck. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/08/full-52768-226952-1000006600.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/08/full-52768-226953-1000006597.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/08/full-52768-226954-1000006598.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/08/full-52768-226955-1000006599.jpg)

They are usually iron/ metalic and it must have been really going fast the way it burnt the romex insulation. Maybe like a half inch ball bearing size. My building is full of equipment and that thing could have bounced and rolled out of site.

Keep it fresh in you memory, it may turn up well into the future. Very cool !
Saw an interesting post regarding bullets shot straight up (or nearly) and how many folks are injured/killed each year from them. Could have come from a loooong way off.
I have seen a lot of bullet holes in metal, this would have been 50 cal size, seemed like it was going way too fast for a bullet falling straight down. Maybe it will show up when I am moving equipment around.

My cousin was shot with what they think was a 5.56 while putting a new roof on the lake house he was bent over it hit him between his neck and shoulder. He thought a piece of his hammer broke off or something. It bleed like crazy. In the error they keep asking him what happend over and over. It was not until they taped something with different projectials on his back and did x rays dud he figure out he had been shot. They left it becus it was close to an artery and his spine they Said. Turned out it was guys shooting down the road.

I belonged to a bench rest club that would let the local cops shoot to qualify and practice, and NOBODY could understand just how rounds from the range would hit in a junk yard , a good mile away, ACROSS THE MO RIVER AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE RANGE????? Turns out those bungholes were playing around shooting clay birds (trying) with their pistols.

I highly doubt it was a meteorite. It's very rare for that to happen. Usually something like this turns out to be iron slag. We astronomy nuts hear this all the time. Way back in the early 80s a local small lake had an explosion and the local police thought someone was playing around with Dynamite but after the U of M got involved turned out it was a meteorite about the size of a BB, but it put a hole in the ice bigger then a two car garage and threw chunks of ice and water for hundreds of feet, so I don’t know what one hitting a building would do but I think a lot more then just a small hole as it’s moving at a velocity way faster then a stray or falling bullet

It did teach me a lesson; I didn't think a dropping bullet would have enough energy to go through a steel building.

It couldnt have come from too far away, being a 45 auto round. Is there someone in the vacinity that shoots often?

It couldnt have come from too far away ......................... If that's your initial thought, I think you'd be surprised.

It couldnt have come from too far away ......................... If that's your initial thought, I think you'd be surprised. I have a JR carbine in 45acp and have shot it on our local range and can keep most shots on a full size silhouette target at the 500 yard station, yes your going to get more bushel basket size accuracy then MOA and a rainbow trajectory but the round will go a lot further then most people would believe and do a lot more damage [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/VDnsGe0QwhA?si=EJ99ck_iDjeEwxFk[/video] He gives a pretty good breakdown of what it will do, it’s amazing how many people think that the 45acp is only good out to 30 yards or so and past that is inaccurate and not good for much, it’s those same people that think of you shoot a bullet up on the air when it comes down all it will do is maybe give you a slight bump on the head if that Well their both wrong

I am pretty sure it came from the East and I have a neighbor that shoots a lot and i measured the distance from my pole building to his house and it is only 1613 feet. So, if they shot up in the air even slightly in my direction it could reach the building from a high elevation.

Carbine changes everything. Yes out of a rifle that does not surprise me. Out of a pistol it's going 900 fps. When it finally hits the ground it's going bb gun speed 300 fps. Average speed of 600 fps divided by 5280 ft it would need nearly 10 seconds of air time to make it a mile.

Obviously you can't say it was him, but sharing what you e discovered and a friendly reminder of where you live wouldn't hurt.

The bullets fired straight up in the air go up until they hit their full possible height. Then they fall at the same rate as if they were dropped from that height. Put an arc on the trajectory, and you have a different story. The Navy did a study on a large open lake. They wanted to see how difficult it would be to shoot straight up in the air and have it come down in the exact same spot. They fired thousands of rounds and had a hard time getting them to a reasonably close distance when they hit the water. Eventually they got lucky and one bullet dropped right in the boat. Dented the aluminum a little bit but did not go through. Depending on the size of the bullet, I believe these were 45 cal, it could put a lump on your melon, but most would only hurt real bad.

I would assume the terminal velocity of a bullet would be lethal. I certainly am not going to test that theory.
