Once the bullet reaches its apogee and looses the velocity and spin stabilization, it never recovers enough to quit tumbling till it his the ground.
Especially a stubby bullet like that.
A surprising bunch of people are killed from yayhoos in foreign countries doin that celebration thing where they fire their guns up into the air.
If I find the story, I'll post it.

Way back in the early 80s a local small lake had an explosion and the local police thought someone was playing around with Dynamite but after the U of M got involved turned out it was a meteorite about the size of a BB, but it put a hole in the ice bigger then a two car garage and threw chunks of ice and water for hundreds of feet, so I don’t know what one hitting a building would do but I think a lot more then just a small hole as it’s moving at a velocity way faster then a stray or falling bullet

Wow, I am really glad it wasn't a meteorite after hearing this. It did teach me a lesson; I didn't think a dropping bullet would have enough energy to go through a steel building.

It couldnt have come from too far away, being a 45 auto round. Is there someone in the vacinity that shoots often?

If that's your initial thought, I think you'd be surprised.

A 45 auto even if shot at a 45* angle won't make it a mile

I'll bet a meteorite with provenance (like yours would be) would have more than just a nominal value.

I have a JR carbine in 45acp and have shot it on our local range and can keep most shots on a full size silhouette target at the 500 yard station, yes your going to get more bushel basket size accuracy then MOA and a rainbow trajectory but the round will go a lot further then most people would believe and do a lot more damage

He gives a pretty good breakdown of what it will do, it’s amazing how many people think that the 45acp is only good out to 30 yards or so and past that is inaccurate and not good for much, it’s those same people that think of you shoot a bullet up on the air when it comes down all it will do is maybe give you a slight bump on the head if that

Well their both wrong

I am pretty sure it came from the East and I have a neighbor that shoots a lot and i measured the distance from my pole building to his house and it is only 1613 feet. So, if they shot up in the air even slightly in my direction it could reach the building from a high elevation.

Carbine changes everything. Yes out of a rifle that does not surprise me. Out of a pistol it's going 900 fps. When it finally hits the ground it's going bb gun speed 300 fps. Average speed of 600 fps divided by 5280 ft it would need nearly 10 seconds of air time to make it a mile.

Pistols ricochet a lot so that bullet could have made it where it did in a number of ways.

May be worth talking to him. Obviously you can't say it was him, but sharing what you e discovered and a friendly reminder of where you live wouldn't hurt.

Very cool !

Saw an interesting post regarding bullets shot straight up (or nearly) and how many folks are injured/killed each year from them.
Could have come from a loooong way off.

The bullets fired straight up in the air go up until they hit their full possible height. Then they fall at the same rate as if they were dropped from that height. Put an arc on the trajectory, and you have a different story.

The Navy did a study on a large open lake. They wanted to see how difficult it would be to shoot straight up in the air and have it come down in the exact same spot. They fired thousands of rounds and had a hard time getting them to a reasonably close distance when they hit the water. Eventually they got lucky and one bullet dropped right in the boat. Dented the aluminum a little bit but did not go through. Depending on the size of the bullet, I believe these were 45 cal, it could put a lump on your melon, but most would only hurt real bad.

I would assume the terminal velocity of a bullet would be lethal. I certainly am not going to test that theory.

Bring it to him and ask him if he wants his bullet back. smile

Quite the opposite.
Square on top of the noggin would most likely kill you.
