Several times I have been in the jury pool and get a notice. For many years I could not serve and would state why which was because I was working out of the area.No problem never called.Retired now and I get a letter of selection for the jury pool.Ok.I have no reason to not be in the pool.Bingo! Selected for jury duty.Never done it before. So I appear along with 80 + people. They ask us to sign in. I sign in and there next to my name is # 77 written in pen.Thinking about that I know I am most likely at the bottom of the list.I ask at the sign in window what that number means.Avoidance was the answer.I ask several times why the # with a rufusal to answer every time.So now the names are called up to number 28 and told to line up.Then the rest of us are told to follow to the court room. I am at the end of the line.So I ask again the lady who is ushering us in the courtroom can I ask a question. She says NO! She was not the person I asked before but she must have been made aware that I was asking about the number.
So in the court room we go.Me being in the very back that is where I found a seat. They would not let me set in a chair.I had to set with other jurors on hard pews.So the questioning begins with 4 being dismissed and 4 replaced of the 28.This is a seriuos trial and the 28 people are are asked questions on and off for 3 plus hours.14 jurors were selected.
Now to the reason I started this thread. It seemed during the questioning that of the 28 people who were questioned most fit a profile that seemed to be what the attorneys were looking for. My question. Was I profiled and because I did not fit the attorny's profile I was given a higher # ?

Probably yes. Attorneys observe / watch potential jurors first. Their clothes, demeaner, and entrance into the selection room. Then the questioning.

So the number was there when I first signed in.There were no attorneys present. My thought was the attorneys read the simple questionars days in advance that we had to submit and decided who would fit best and then assigned a number.

I got a letter ...to show up for jury duty 2 weeks ago.

Had a little movie to watch with 150 other people...

Then my row and another couple rows ..got called into the court room.

Sat in the church like bench....and nevah got selected for the jury..

But had to go back again this coming Monday ...to do it again.

But got a text on my phone ...saying it was cancelled and I am good for 3 years .

In some States, you can apply for a PERMENENT jury duty exemption if you're 70 or older. :-)

Yeah I surprised mine when I returned the letter in person stating I would be there. She asked you’re not trying to get out of it? Nope, my civic duty!
Of course, you call a number after 5 on Friday to see if it’s still on for the next week and I get the message thanking me but I won’t be needed. I’ve been in this county for 28 years and it’s the first time I’ve ever received a notice.

I don't mind serving but to be deceived? That I am not pleased with.Of the 80 + people they did not care or were to stupid to figure it out.I go with the latter.

Having been thru this a time or two and being called and then voted foreman of the jury, cause it was full of cowards, but thats a longer story

My guess would be that one or the other Attorneys decide you were asking to much about things and di not want that type of person on the jury. You may think no one noticed you, however if even one person did and you were noticed talking to another it got around pretty quickly, they have done these rodeos so many times the attorney's can almost pick before even asking questions !

I was given a number before I walked into the courthouse to sign in initially so your theory does not apply.

I was on a jury. I had a number that was second to last out of a pool of 75. I was juror #4. I watched them file through 190 people to get 14. The defendant beat his girlfriend within an inch of her life. She jumped out of the car at 55 mph. He stopped got out and kicked her. Anyway he got convicted on all counts and served a measly 8 years.

To the point.... I and the rest on the jury were sickened by how many domestic violence victims there are. Several had family members murdered by their spouse. All were asked the same question and none could talk through their tears.

Not to take away from how horrible this is BUT where and when is the woman's responsibility start and stop. After all they picked to be with a woman beater and most get plenty of warning signs but choose to stay in the situation. Tell one day it's worse than all the times before. Yes she is a victim but mostly a victim of here own stupidity if she didn't leave after the first incidents or indications.

Going by the numbers they typically keep going back to the beaters. So at what point do we hold them responsible for their stupidity. Or do they get a free pass and permanent victim card? I just don't have much empathy for stupidity. Maybe I'm cold or off base but she should get out at the first sign. Yet most get beat and go back over and over. The men don't have a place in a functional society but that doesn't excuse the stupid on her part in my opinion.

They sent me a questionnaire a few years back. I answered honestly, and they sent me a letter saying I was no longer being considered. I haven't heard back since. They are looking for people that believe anything the police and DA tell them. At least in my case, if you tell them that you won't give any more weight to the police than you would the accused, and sometimes less, they don't like that, and I guess, black mark you.

I was always reluctant to serve on a jury until I actually did it. Myself and a couple others yanked the rug out from under a slimy ambulance chaser. No reason for sane people to complain about stupid outcomes of juries when we can actually do something about it.

Have also been dismissed because I knew a thing or two about the issue of the case. A farm kid on a farm related case not likely to believe what they are told vs what they know.

I have been to jury duty MANY times down here in Texas

My county has a lot going on and when they summons you there are normally 2-300 in the initial check in room. They call roll and then they start assigning you to a court, usually 60-80 until they have cases covered. Once you get in the court you are seated by numbers, no idea how you were assigned numbers but very well could have been set up before you got there as you filled out a questionnaire prior to showing up that morning AND they have had time to go over those a little before you left the first room for the court.
I know if there are 60 in the pool and you are in the 40's you have a better chance of not being picked

I have a friend that his wife is a county judge, going to ask him

I would not say they "profiled" you but possible you didn't "check the boxes" they were desiring for the case (race/age/sex/etc)
Also looks like it would be very hard to do that with a prosecution and defense having input and letting one or the other set the order would be stacking the jury in someone's favor

For this girl, it was the first time. I blame the state as well. He should have got 25+ years. He has a long history of violence and beating women. 8 years for what he did isn't even half of what he deserved. Of course 50 cents could have saved millions.

Guys defense was so pathetic he said she jumped out on her own and that's how she broke her jaw. Said he helped her back to the car, showed a picture of "blood" on the car door. When I looked at the pic up close I could see it was bondo.

It's the "sometimes less" part they don't like. I was asked the same question and my response was everyone's voice is equal till you add them up and that is where you find the truth. Lucky for me the trial I was on was cut and dry.
