U pick place here advertising $1.95/lb, and that's with you doing the picking... don't know what a bushel weighs but $1.95 sounded high... maybe not???
You all do have pluck!! Nice little short-term gig.
Not much for fruit around here, too far north to grow peaches. There's a few apple orchard operations, sort of family fun affairs and pick or buy some apples as well. If I had an acreage, I'd have different kinds of fruit. Wife nixed anything here.
Supposedly, my paternal grandparents used to drive about 30-40 miles south from their farm in late July or early August and pick bunches of choke cherrys and wild plums growing in the Missouri River valley draws. I know they probably had gooseberries on their farm. Most old farmsteads around here have a few mulberry trees.
I think the size of farms in Appalachia tend to have people doing more side gigs, such as having some orchard action. I doubt many Appalachian farms are taking out million dollar (or more ) operating loans to do their multi-thousand acres of a couple of crops. Being less capital intensive allows people to be a bit more diverse in what they grow. Modern crop insurance has changed a lot of behavior. People get used to having that backstop and the whole system favors big commodity production.
"And God said, Let us make man in our image and let them have dominion and all the creatures that move along the ground". Genesis 1:26

We're resourceful and don't have 1000s of acres so we gotta use our heads and make a dollar where and when we can Lol

Typical half bushel peach boxes are two layers of fruit and weigh about 20 lbs. Some of the hard cling peaches might get put up in bushel boxes though.
I just planted 110 peach trees Cathryn. Won't have to buy the neighbors....LOL. BTW, I've been seeing peaches in our Farmers markets (certified organic) going from $4 -$6 a lb.
They are a big deal here the peach truck puts out a notice when they are coming and where they will be and people flock there every year. There is a place in Sioux Falls that specializes in fresh fruit shipments as their main business kind of like a broker.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
I bought a 25 lb box of Florida peaches for $50.00 I think there were 58 peaches In that box. I made lots of jam . I never want to see another peach for a long time.
