I have a Bobcat T66, it is 75 hp and extra wide tracks. I have a root grapple also Bobcat for it and it is amazing what you can do with it. Very happy with it and has made life much easier on the farm for this old man.

Thanks danny! I’ll stay away from the rebuilt engine ones. Appreciate it!

What's your budget? Bobcat 773, s175, s185 are some of the best machines ever built imo. The tracks that go over tires suck, don't bother. Tracks suck in ice or snow, if you want to do snow removal you'll want tires.

What's closest dealer and how are they to work with? I wouldn't buy something if dealer was 100+ miles away.

Good tip, thank you!

Thanks everyone for the comments! My budget is in the $25,000 range. I know I won’t be getting anything new at that price, but I think the quality of my life will improve with a skid steer!

I think we have almost every dealer out here 15 miles away.

The nice thing about the steel tracks is they come off, unless you don’t have mud, skid steer have low ground clearance, not good in soft heavy soils or sand with no binder. I agree on snow, tires are best in snow.

You guys with love affairs with dealers, I fix everything myself and can order parts from anywhere

Buy a diesel ! No comparison in longevity. Any of them can have spacers and steel tracks mounted over tires.

Tracked machines have pluses and minuses.

I am guessing you’re looking for an affordable used machine. Older Mustangs were dandy machines. CASE tend to be slow and awkward. 743 Bobcat our a nice machine.

I've ran many different types of skid loaders, most will do the job at hand. John Deere, Cat and Bobcat are all good. I prefer tracks for most things but like some have said, they are not good on ice or packed snow. Most guys that do a lot of snow removal have tires since the tracks are like a pig on ice.

I've used several different types of skid steers. Of the ones I've used I would rank them in this order.

1. New Holland
2. Bobcat
3. Case
4. Mustang

Of those, the only one I would stay away from is the Mustang. I've only used 3 different Mustangs, but all 3 were junk and dangerous. I saw a guy almost get killed by one and another one fail and smash a form trailer.

Keith

Curious what happened when you saw someone almost killed by a mustang.
I bought an older Owatonna 330 (same machine as John Deere 70) last summer and have it ready to go other than replacing one lift cylinder seal. I have heard that the brakes need to be in good order because if the engine dies on a hill, it will freewheel. I did check the brakes on a small hill and they held, so I am somewhat confident, but curious what happened that you saw.

I have only used Bobcat and Case and both are outstanding. From Keith's list I cannot imagine that a New Holland would be anything but top notch.

For cleaning stalls and small feed pads (concrete) a Boncat 734 is all you need but for anything off of a pad you want a bigger machine with more horsepower.

I've had 2 Case 1845c's. One with steel tracks. Great machines as I prefer hand controls. First one had 4500 hours when I got rid of it. No problems. Newer one has 1250 hours. Great machine. I also like the Bobcats but don't really like the foot controls.

I also build most of the implements myself. Just did a brush hog this spring and it works excellent. Also have a tree/post puller, land leveler, grapple for forks, grapple bucket, wood splitter, post hole digger. All home built.

Bobcat and New Holland are the most common brands used here by the large dairies. Many lease the machines for 2-4 or 5 years and then get a new one, Skid steers from large dairies get tons and tons of hours and used 24/7 365 so buying those is not probably one's best option.

I had Bobcats, I was happy with them. Today if I needed one I’d first look for a CAT.
That being said good friend of mine runs a s650 Bobcat. I am more than impressed with what that machine can do.

Like a car,in a used one the engine, drive train, and hydraulics are the problem points. Pick an order.
