Should start gathering hareems in a few weeks

Around here a lot of people put out salt licks and cameras on them, plus there are salt licks all over for range cows. Open range, public ground, like Lawdog is on, except it is all timber. Here at least the elk will hammer the salt licks in the spring but taper off about this time of year and by hunting season they won't be hardly using them at all. You can't hunt over salt, but it really doesn't matter because by hunting season they aren't hitting it much.

We were surprised with the lack of sign we found, between no dropping and an abundance of cattle we found very little elk sign. The guy that hunts with us is a local with lots of knowledge of the area and the elk said they will move in during the breeding season it’s just early. My buddy checked the cam pic dates from last year and things started to pick up about the 3rd week in Aug.

They have a group of guys that coop on the elk that share knowledge of what’s happening in the area. Being its draw tags and not many tags are given out it’s a different mentality than OTC competition places.

No, if you look at the left side of this picture, taken last year by my friend, THAT is a tank.

I may have mentioned this last year but mule deer hunting with Maggy we sat one morning and watched a small group of bulls below us, most very nice in the serious trophy range but for one. That one was I believe bigger than the one above, stupidly bigger in body and horns than any other. A proverbial bull among yearlings
Sure hope you get a good one Law…. I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir but I have been visually reminded over and over there is no other ungulate with a nose like the elk have.

Heading back out for an overnight next week to replace the cam chips and set another blind up along with a tree stand so I’m ready to hunt the day I get there. I can’t see dragging myself down the first day setting up what I can set up now. The blind goes in a closed trail 1/2 miles in so I’ll drag my game cart with the blind, carpet and chair in at the same time.

The other place is near an ATV trail 3/4 of a mile in, I can drive that in with the 4 wheeler and set it up, the other blind is in place already just hope the cattle don’t destroy it.

Looks like we got a good rain out there always good for the forest just was hoping to have limited water/wallowing spots to compete with, will see how much it soaked in at the dry spots next week.

Around 27 years for this one I missed a year or two. I’ve got 33 years in for a State park tag my buddy is at 40 years for the park that’s once in a lifetime. I can’t even apply again for the tag I drew for another 10 years now.

Lots of elk in that area it’s amazing how they can be ghosts in the forest with their size and numbers, back out Monday to do some prep work.

Congrats on the 3 elk.
