I wonder why the salt makes the apple more appealing?

Wife: That's the 4th time you've gone back for dessert, doesn't that embarrass you? Me: No, I keep telling them it's for you.

All rodents crave salt. The salt on the apple slices "melts" becoming sticky and giving off more smell than just hard salt. Smell of salt helps get the rabbit into the trap.
