Got a Lowe's nearby Dave? I think you'd be a good fit for their overnight stocker position.
Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.

delivery driver at an auto parts store? My dads friend works at one part time couple days a week. sits around and talks to people until he has to deliver a set of brakes to a garage. This sounds like a pretty good idea to me. It's more sitting than walking which is preferable for Dave. Also there is a Lowes on west end of Dubuque. I'm not sure physically if he could do it though with an 8 hour shift. Putting up fur would be a heck of good job for him as I think he's knowledgeable on that but I don't think the demand is there.

Any pork packers near you? Everyone I ever been in had a gate where trucks check in and out. Not much walking. Check load number on the way in and bills on the way out. Have to check the number on the trailer seal against the bills. Some of them the guard shack has a printer for the paperwork. Very minimal walking. Driver will pull up so you only have to walk a few feet.

You can deduct medical expenses. Knee surgery is expensive, it will lower your tax burden. Having one surgery would likely push your income low enough, that you would be covered for the second knee in the following year. Keith

If your contemplating surgery Dave, most not-for-profit hospitals have a chart of maximum charges for individuals as a percentage of poverty, regardless of the billed costs. Inquire with the hospital's finance office, never hurts to ask, if and what programs may be available for your situation.
For an equivalent income when I was working, Obamacare vs SS when I retired, I was paying less under Obamacare than what I currently pay under Social security part C for the same 'silver' tier benefits with the same insurance company. Still wanting someone to explain the logic of why seniors are being taken advantage of under Medicare!
Medicare is not the bargain you may think it is, it's a deduction from your social security and only covers 80% of costs, you are responsible for the other 20% which for surgery gets expensive. So you will need additional insurance ... Supplemental or part C and/D. Part C advantage insurance MAY be cheaper than standard federal Medicare program and have additional benefits not available with Medicare, but it is not free, none of it. If you're eligible for Medicaid (your state program) you should be able to get the best of both worlds if you watch the income limits for eligibility.
Dave, you definitely need to consult with an independent insurance agent (or two or three) that specializes in elder health care insurance to find your particular best options based on your current and/or near future circumstances.

My younger brother and his wife both worked at several Amazon warehouse across the country as they nomad in retirement. A lot of on their feet work. They were always tired, but it gave them good income and extra money during their travels. Work 2 months on a 4-6 month stay, and get references for the next Amazon warehouse for an easy hire at their next travel spot. They did that for several years before deciding where to settle.

Dave, in your case, getting Medicaid or Medicare to fix your knees is nothing to be ashamed of, so that you can be productive again. I don't know your financial situation, but if you qualify, you should have them help you get healthy. There is nothing wrong with a productive member of society, like you, getting help when they need it.

Keith C.- If I'm reading it right, if you make $20,120.40 or less a year, you can get Medicaid in Iowa. Technically I'm sure you're correct but traditionally, in most states, its been very hard for a man to get on Medicaid. Now, with Dave being above 60 years old and with a bum knee, maybe it would be easier for him, especially if he keeps dogging them AND he doesn't get po'ed and give up. It would probably be best if he had an advocate (probably from an NGO if they would take him on as a client) to help him and even talk to the State people if they do in-person appointment with the paper pushers.
