I was laid up a couple years ago for a while and started watching videos of hunting African plains game on the Youtube, which led to me researching the cost of a safari and I was surprised to learn that I can go to Africa on an all-inclusive hunt cheaper than I can go out west on a guided elk hunt and get to hunt 10 or so species over two weeks rather than 1 and done with the elk. Its still a chunk of change but at that time it was about 2/3rds what an elk hunt would cost.

I grew up hunting for meat. Fun was secondary. Part of the fun was butchering and eating the animal. I really enjoy hunting. I get going to Africa and Africans getting the meat since for the most part they are not allowed to kill valuable to foreign hunters animals. I personally would only shoot stuff I wanted to enjoy for supper. For me personally I like to do it myself. Hiring somebody to show me an animal is a lot like shooting at targets. Fun sure but not nearly as satisfying as finding and shooting and processing the animal on my own.

Are there hunts available where you get a map of boundaries, list of species, and left to wander around around on your own? Maybe a radio to call in position so Africans can come get the meat?

A lot of places require non residents to have a licensed guide that you buy your tags/licence through. Non resident can’t even goose hunt here anymore unless they go through an outfitter. I believe the property owner is grandfathered under the old rule. (There’s a few Americans who own land here for goose, and probably other stuff illegally)
Haven’t looked into it, but is there any states that’ll let a non resident go out on his own for big game? Bird/small game only maybe?

I dont think South Africa is as bad, but a lot of the prime countries just north of there, a lot of stuff will kill you. In Zimbabwe, we had a Game and Parks employee carrying an AK 47 the whole trip, and it wasnt to stop a charging cape buffalo. The snakes we saw were black mambas and mozambique cobras. We were charged on sight by a mama elephant. Two shots over her head and she stopped at ten yards. Another bluff charge by four elephants. Lion tracks over our tracks when returning to the truck showed we werent the only ones hunting. The PH had a bandaged arm when we arrived at camp - from a leopard attack a couple weeks before. The safari companies try to please - I am sure if you wanted to butcher one of your kills, they would take you to the skinning shed

Where I went in Zimbabwe, it was almost all tracking - very little spot and stalk - hunting proper as the british accent ph’s called it. Real hunting. The thing that amazed me most about the whole trip was the trackers. Pretty sure they could track a crow by the trail its shadow made as it flew over

Tom Miranda almost bit it while returning from his safari when ambushed. The tourist behind him wasn’t so lucky.
Obviously, research the PHs good. Not all are up to snuff.

White Cliffs, a buddy hunted a lion in the Kalahari. Told of two bushmen trackers who tracked his lion at a jog, in the desert barefoot. I would like to hang out with people who could do that. He did not however. Just told me of them.
