For a 600 dollar difference on a 3 year old machine vs new I would buy new. I usually buy new anyway. If I can't save some real money I won't take a chance that I am just buying someone else's headache. Most people will keep a mower till its junk. If ones been used very little I wonder why it's for sale.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

People are "cheap" because they work hard for their money. Pre covid one would be lucky to lose 30 percent on a 3 year old implent

It's not an entitlement mentality. Guss listed his item at the price he wanted to sell it for. It sounds like the guy came up to within $100.00 of asking price after low-balling him. Depending on how long it's been on the market I think I'd sell it to him for the $2,500.00 he offered.
When I have an item to sell I look at various auction sites and other sources to see what similar items are selling for. Then i price mine a little higher. I know there will be low offers. I give myself a little room to negotiate.
I reject low-ball offers but will haggle with folks who make reasonable offers. If I get no serious offers in a reasonable amount time I know I've priced my item too high and either lower my price or take the item off the market.
I enjoy haggling on stuff I buy too. I've gotten pretty good at it. I had to, I deal with the Amish all the time and those folks are some shrewd hagglers.
Eh...wot?

Some folks want to "win" more than they want to buy a brush hog.
Some folks want to 'win" more than they want to sell a brush hog.
Value is the sum agreed on by both purchaser and seller at each transaction.
Price is dependent on how badly one party wants to sell and the other party wants to buy.

so does the rocks wreck the blades or the gearbox? I would buy any 6 foot or larger mower with a good box and deck for 500......
Gearbox or frame. The old sidewinders with the tire drive are very popular when trying to cover rough ground. I’m using a 30 year old Bush Hog brand 6’. It has held up well over the past couple of years. I gave $500 for it and had a second one found that was 3-point lift.

Vehicles and equipment, most people expect to jew the price down. Whether buying new or used, if you pay the asking price, you are generally paying too much. I know this changed some with Covid, that was a simple supply and demand issue, they weren't hardly making anything new, so if you wanted a new truck you stood in line and paid what the dealer asked when one became available, which caused the price of used to get ridiculous.
When I go to sell anything I figure what I want for it and then price it higher, because I expect any potential buyers to attempt to jew me down. I sold a 94 Ford diesel pickup a few years ago and you could have knocked me over with a feather when the guy paid the asking price without even giving me an offer. I had done my research and knew what they were being sold for and priced mine accordingly, which seemed awfully high to me, since I priced it for what I had paid for it ten years before. Still would have felt like I priced it way too low when the guy paid my asking price without trying to haggle... except it had been on the market almost three weeks and he was only the second person to come look at it.

It's the people who shoot you really low ball offers that irritate me. If I'm selling something for say $500, I know its worth about that much. Then people will waste my time offering $100. Would you take $25? Delivered?
