For a 600 dollar difference on a 3 year old machine vs new I would buy new. I usually buy new anyway. If I can't save some real money I won't take a chance that I am just buying someone else's headache. Most people will keep a mower till its junk. If ones been used very little I wonder why it's for sale.

People are "cheap" because they work hard for their money. Pre covid one would be lucky to lose 30 percent on a 3 year old implent

It's not an entitlement mentality. Guss listed his item at the price he wanted to sell it for. It sounds like the guy came up to within $100.00 of asking price after low-balling him. Depending on how long it's been on the market I think I'd sell it to him for the $2,500.00 he offered.

When I have an item to sell I look at various auction sites and other sources to see what similar items are selling for. Then i price mine a little higher. I know there will be low offers. I give myself a little room to negotiate.

I reject low-ball offers but will haggle with folks who make reasonable offers. If I get no serious offers in a reasonable amount time I know I've priced my item too high and either lower my price or take the item off the market.

I enjoy haggling on stuff I buy too. I've gotten pretty good at it. I had to, I deal with the Amish all the time and those folks are some shrewd hagglers.

Eh...wot?

It's the people who shoot you really low ball offers that irritate me. If I'm selling something for say $500, I know its worth about that much. Then people will waste my time offering $100.

I don't disagree with the discount from new for used equipment but also think it is important to look at the current new price vs the new price paid several years ago. The 20% inflation in prices over the past few years is not insignificant.

In a free market economy, stuff is worth whatever the buyer and seller agree that it's worth. That goes for labor, too. It's that simple.

Some folks want to "win" more than they want to buy a brush hog.

Some folks want to 'win" more than they want to sell a brush hog.

Value is the sum agreed on by both purchaser and seller at each transaction.

Price is dependent on how badly one party wants to sell and the other party wants to buy.

Gearbox or frame. The old sidewinders with the tire drive are very popular when trying to cover rough ground. I’m using a 30 year old Bush Hog brand 6’. It has held up well over the past couple of years. I gave $500 for it and had a second one found that was 3-point lift.

what I get a kick out of is the guy selling something and it sits for months and he says everyone is too cheap.
Fact is he's asking too much.

something that doesn't sell is cause its priced too high.
something that sells right away was priced too low.

Unfortunately I seem to sell my stuff fast.

Also in the equation is the condition of the economy, lots of people don't have lots of spare cash around right now. So things will sell for less.

"is this still available"?

followed by

"is it is good condition"?

followed by

"does it work well"?

Vehicles and equipment, most people expect to jew the price down. Whether buying new or used, if you pay the asking price, you are generally paying too much. I know this changed some with Covid, that was a simple supply and demand issue, they weren't hardly making anything new, so if you wanted a new truck you stood in line and paid what the dealer asked when one became available, which caused the price of used to get ridiculous.

When I go to sell anything I figure what I want for it and then price it higher, because I expect any potential buyers to attempt to jew me down. I sold a 94 Ford diesel pickup a few years ago and you could have knocked me over with a feather when the guy paid the asking price without even giving me an offer. I had done my research and knew what they were being sold for and priced mine accordingly, which seemed awfully high to me, since I priced it for what I had paid for it ten years before. Still would have felt like I priced it way too low when the guy paid my asking price without trying to haggle... except it had been on the market almost three weeks and he was only the second person to come look at it.

I had a friend and neighbor that I often negotiated with to our mutual benefit on items I didn't want or need any longer. It went like this.

Me: Hey Larry, are you interested in that?

Larry: What do you want for it?

Me: I want for it to be gone.

Larry: OK, I'll take it and scrap it out.

Unfortunately my friend Larry has passed away.

Never sell because you have to. Had an old Cherokee for sale for $1500. A guy called and said he wanted it and was coming to look it over. He showed up I showed him everything wrong and he offered $1000. I declined and told him it was $1500. He then offered $1200, so I told him the price just went to $1600. He looked surprised and said his final offer was $1350. I told him no thanks it’s now $1700. He said $1500 and I again told him no thanks it’s now $1800. He got mad and left.

A week later he and another guy show up at the same time. The new guy offers me $1500, asking price and the other guy counters with $1700. It was at that point I thought they were gonna fight. My wife opened the door with the keys and said the first with $2K in cash gets the keys. They both left and the new guy shows back up an hour later with $2K and left with the Jeep, lol. The other guy calls back and ask if I’ll take $1800, lol. Told him he just missed it as the other guy showed back up with $2K.

I will let something rot or rust away if someone doesn’t want to pay what I’m asking. And yeah, if they lowball me I’ll raise the price.

People are odd. My wife was trying to get rid of some of out no tail kittens. After 3 weeks of no interest I told her to put $50 on them. She thought was nuts yet they were all sold in less than a week.

No one wanted them for free at free that must not be worth anything but at $50 they jumped on them at the good price.

Some times you are better off selling them retail laugh
