So apparently the main culprit of my new project not working is the fact my home made brass it too thick, bought more factory ammo to shooting just use that brass but now I have an excuse to try neck turning grin any of y'all ever done it ? If so what system did you use?

Gotta say I'm also looking hard at getting some custom barrels spin up at this point but man these little cartridges are too much dang fun grin with it doing this with 8.5" can only imagine what this little sucker would do out of a 16-20" barrel blush

Wolfie, get rid of the digital caliper and get a real dial caliper. I speak from experience as an engineer. Besides a caliper of any kind is not the tool for that job. Get a ball micrometer, they are specifically for measuring the wall thickness on tubing. Another way to get a rough idea of neck thickness is to seat a bullet and then measure the neck diameter with a one inch micrometer. Subtract the diameter of the bullet and then divide by two. That will give you a rough idea of wall thickness. I can guarantee it's not consistent all the way around. The mic will tell you that.

Neck turning is pretty straight forward. I use K&M equipment. First step in my process is full length size. Then I expand the neck with the proper mandrel to size to take the separate turning mandrel set up in the turning tool along with the cutter (I use a carbide cutter). Setting up the cutter to get to the proper neck wall thickness takes a little fiddling but it's not difficult. In my experience with cases that have not been reformed from something else I have gotten away with cutting about 75% plus around the neck. With reformed brass I'm sure you will get a full diameter cut. All the brass you are working with will need to be the same consistent length when you start. Give the brass a final full length size, and final trim to length later. You will need to know the throat diameter in your gun to come up with the proper neck wall thickness.

For some of my guns, 4 of them, I get a little more involved but not much. Follow the instructions that come with the tool and use sizing wax on the mandrels and inside the necks.

Wolf Dog....everything Paul said especially the ball mic. Are you shooting a custom or a factory? You know the chamber neck measurements?

I spend enough time on brass prep. I have no interest in competition shooting. Guns are a tool to me. I don't need to be able to turn silver dollar size groups into dime groups. I know you like new cartridges and AR's Enjoy tinkering and shooting paper. Hats off to you. I have a 22 hornet. Shoots great for fur and bait gathering. Brass and ammo easy to find. So have fun figuring it out. Keep us updated on your progress.

P.S. instead of neck turning will a light load under a cast bullet, fire form them to usable?

I tried neck turning and found it to be of no value for the reloading I was doing for my hunting rifles. You have an entirely different situation having formed your own brass, something some of the other responses don't appear to take into account. Do what Paul said.

When I do the final sizing I use a separate full length neck bushing die to get the neck tension I want.

Thanks for the info....might have to get a digital ball mic though because I've had issues with non easy read type stuff lol

Coming from the side of an International Benchrest Shooters (IBS) long range competitor, Paul has a good recommendation. K&M neck turners do a fine job.

That's a neat thread Wolf Dog. Now it shines a better light on the reasoning for turning necks. I actually use this for my neck turning measurements: https://www.hollandguns.com/m7/NT-M...ickness-micrometer-complete-package.html
