Looking for advice on route. Never been down, or up, the Alaska hiway. Apparently there are a few different roads to choose from when going thru the mountains. Early October isn't that cold here in Fairbanks. Maybe colder around high country?
Who has experience?

I am doing the same route. Tok to Sweet Grass MT. Usually good easy driving. It is a nice time of year for driving.

By water from Seatle to Haines AK is pretty good price I believe. Not sure on how long of Ferry ride it would be though.

Too spendy and too much possibility for problems on the ferry. We would then have to drive to Mt. from Seattle.
So far friends info says it shouldn't be too bad. Little concerned about snow/ice going thru high country.

Looks like < than 260$ from WA to Ketchikan AK. One person no vehicle no cabin. I think it would be an interesting journey by Ferry. Of course I do understand it doesn't fit your criteria.

Why not Whittier? Avoid Canada completely!

OK, all you ferry guys.............what's the time and what's the cost? I assume we would have to ferry all the way to Seattle? Pretty skeptical it would be cost effective!

If south bound you would probably have to get to Haines or Skagway to get ferry to WA state. Not very often they make the connection between SE and PWS. Poor man’s cruise if no vehicle. Would need to look up the cost and schedule

Must’ve been on the Tustemena or Kennicott as those are the only two certified for open ocean. That connection is pretty rare these days. I took Tustemena from downtown Seattle to Kodiak once. 8 days, 35 foot seas crossing the gulf : )
