I never have done it when changing my oil. I tried it today. Still had the 3 to 4 second chatter before oil pressure got up. Do it if you like, from my test, it doesn't seem to matter....besides, there's still oil in all the passages even after you drain it, so wear shouldn't be any issue.

I fill the filter on my 5.7 Cummins because the owner's manual says to.

I also do when I do, but then again most of what I do is big engines. Just less time putting more in the engine

Depends on how oil filter mounts. If it goes on "top side" down.....well you know what'll happen...lol

I just wet my finger with the new oil and run it around the gasket.

You're gonna have to add another quart after start up anyway.

Many vehicles it would not work side mounts and cartridge types both of what I it have must be a bottom mount option.

I usually do if I can but the filter housing on my Ford 2.7 is upside down so you can't, it has a feature called flat foot crank. You depress brake & accelerator all the way down then try to start it. The motor will not turn over, only crank but it primes the system.

Like most of us here..I've been changing my own oil for 50+ years

And Nevah filled the new oil filter. ...Race cars and regular cars ..

No problem

Same here, but I could see it with bigger filters in a vertical mount like on the big diesels. Most car and truck engines they aren't really positioned or have the volume that it would matter.

Oil lubrication specialists always recommend pre-filling the filter if possible.

Any delay in getting oil pressure to normal can cause damage.

You'll only know that if you are testing the oil each change.

I own a Subaru, upside down filter drives me crazy. Especially in an engine that is horizontal in design.

I still got the delay pre filling it today.

I asked that question years ago while touring the Cat factory in Peoria il, they said not to fill any filters, engine or hydraulic because you have a greater chance of getting contaminants in the system doing so
