99% of my trapping is on public land and have had traps messed with over and over, don't count of any prosecution of violators even with videos of them messing with traps be lucky if they even get a wrist slap, as far as being secretive kinda hard to do with 2 to 3 feet of snow on the ground and all the bunny snugglers have to do is follow the tracks you have to make every day with the daily trap check requirement, only thing one can do is what I did last year and will do in the future is set traps where the skinney skiers /snowshoers don't / won't go because of terrain and distance, THANK YOU SNOWDOG! far end of last years line 17 miles from vehicle. Yep 34 mi round trip, this year's will be even longer, plus will have a surprise for ANYONE that messes with traps they'll smell like skunk until they get out and change clothes. As far as cams getting stolen Fortunately I have a 4 piece ladder for my deer stand and with the SnowDog can take 2 sections and get my cams 10+,feet up a tree and can do the same with the skunk essence bomb so a mist of essence settles over the person messing with traps. I dint read the entire post,,,,, but why walk 34 miles? for a under valued fur?

“My” area is kinda too far for skiers and not a friendly snowmobile trail. They’ve got much better areas closer to home to park, unload and start their rides. We access the line from private property so there’s no fresh used snowmobile trails into the bush off the road. I usually just get some hunters in fall. With the poor winter we had last year, we were quading about 1/2 our line until enough snow fell in early January. The one time we heard a guy yelling and several quads running. So I yelled back. We met up with them and they had come from private land to the south and we’re looking for an old trail. Good guys, they told us that they crossed 2 ponds that looked active and even helped cut a trail to them. They were basically driving through the bush, kinda lost, and just kept heading north knowing they’d hit the road eventually or have to turn around…lol. Never saw them again. Took some otter, beaver and a couple wolves off that new trail. I know guys will dab some Marten Magic on an overhanging branch near their marten sets. The sledders find out when they stop to eat. It’s on their helmet or shoulder, then they wipe it off and now it’s on their hand, then inside their glove and it just migrates everywhere….lol.
Wind Blew, crap flew, out came the line crew

Be as incognito as you can. Other trappers are the worst, and the best. There are some real scumbags in the trapping community. Takes a trapper to find a trapper. Most will leave your stuff alone. Maybe having a look to see or learn something. Not all though.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

But alot of people including trappers have no respect

Curious how many of you trap on public land. I just went to check a trail camera on one of my public land spots and it was stolen and has me worried for trapping season. I usually trap mostly beaver and rats but this year I drew a cat tag here in Wisconsin so I will be trapping public land when I suspect more bow hunters will be out and about. How worried should I be about people messing with sets? Do you try to be as secretive as possible with your sets? I was hoping to use flagging and other techniques for my cat tag but I'm not sure if maybe that will draw too much attention to the area as far as people go. I trapped some public land in Wyoming, not many coyote there, public land in Iowa, no way, pheasant, duck, deer hunters mess you up, especially pheasant hunters with dogs

I have about a dozen CamPark cameras from Amazon, they are cheap! I put them up higher than eye level pointing down. I have climbing sticks to get out of reach. Attach with these home made holders that allow you to move the cameras to any angle without tools. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/08/full-57883-227878-img_0116.jpeg) The cameras take good quality not great quality pictures and videos. I’m thinking of switching to cell service cameras on some of them just to monitor traps, they don’t allow the trap checks to be skipped though. wws My buddy was actually telling me I can use some of his climbing sticks so I might try this. Just to get them high enough up people will be less likely to mess with them or see them. Just hoping it won't effect the amount of pictures taken as I was hoping to get some cameras in thicker areas to see where bobcat and fisher are traveling

Wouldnt even consider it around here. Public ground in SE Nebraska are mostly relatively small tracks of land and get a lot of foot traffic. I like my traps too much to risk them. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
