It's time for new tires before winter gets here. 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, regular cab, long box, 4WD.

It has BFG All-Terrains on it right now. I have run those tires on the last several trucks. Always been happy with them, but was not impressed with them on this truck. Mainly in the snow on pavement, off road they are still good in my book. I chalk some of that up to the fact that these are 265 wide, and my older trucks had 235 and 245 wide. I firmly believe a narrower tire is better on paved roads in the snow, as it cuts down to the pavement better.

Current size is 265/70R17. Half wondering if 245/75R17 would give me better winter traction on the roads (they are a touch cheaper and lighter also). I don't do much mudding. Farmers don't like it when you tear up their roads and fields, so I stay off them until they are dry and/or froze.

I am also running load range E's, might switch to C's. I like the heavier side wall tires for bombing offroad, less worried about sidewall damage than regular "light truck" tires.

What are your guy's opinions of good all-terrain tires? Looks don't matter to me, I want tires that work.

I have had great luck with Falken Wild Peaks on several vehicles.

Tough decisions. I gave up on trying to squeeze max miles life out of all terrains as part of my decision. It’s good to save money and not replace too often, but firmer tires don’t have the grab when I need them to be grabby and the trade off is the softer composition of grippy tires means they wear faster.
Also price per tire I look at. How much to put a new set on with all the balancing and other costs.
I read and reread every tire review by independent sources I could find. Those are helpful. Some break down by how they handle in mud, snow, ice, and hard surface. Very helpful.
Falkans got decent reviews, so did general. My local tire shop it’s interesting to see all the mechanics running generals on their own trucks. Hmmm.
Firestones were good, so were Michelins.
Watching this thread carefully as my own replacements will be die probably next fall.

I did run one set of Generals, the AT2's. Darn good tire. Been going with BFG's cause they've been less expensive and I used to be really happy with them.
I agree about mileage. Lots of miles is great, but hard rubber doesn't grip well. I get 60 to 75k out of the BFG's typically, that's fine with me.
Might have to look at the General's again this go around.

I had a 2016 sierra and first set I replaced the originals with were cooper ATs and those were good for first year but they wore fast and wow did those pick up rocks like crazy. Fixed a lot of flats on this coopers. Then I put a set of general ATs on them and they were terrific tires.
I have a 2022 sierra now and it came with Goodyear ATs.
Never been a huge fan of goodyears but I’ll drive these until replacements due and then have to find something. Most likely will be next fall.

If mostly rough country roads and farm land not 500 miles a day hiway I get my pickup tires recapped at our tire place run them on everything I own except my brides pickup as she won’t allow them on her truck but I have gotten good wear and miles outta them just my opinion a lot cheaper for me than new tires

I use General grabbers APT on the Ram and coppers ATs on the plow truck.

I gotta throw this out there , you are smart looking for tires this time of year. Once the first snowflake hits the ground , tire shops are swamped. Happens every year , people wait till the last minute and are upset they have to wait or have the rubber they need ordered.

I worked in a tire shop for a couple years.

I currently have P 265/17 BF Goodrich All/Terrain tires on my 2006 Silverado extended cab 4wd truck. I will need new tires b4 winter also. I will follow this thead. I do very little Off road, but do haul a lot of sap in the spring with a 200 gallon pickup tank and a 200 gallon on a single axle trailer.

I was a GM tech for 11 years, I know how that goes. I like to get new tires in the Sept/Oct timeframe. That way I get to feel them out a bit before winter.

I typically just buy the best priced all terrain with at least a 60k mile rating unless it's for a job specific vehicle . Like my jeep had 34" bias ply supper swampers. But I only got 23k miles out of them and I only got that many becuse it was a light vehicle. But they were great on snow amd mud both. Loud as heck could hear me coming from a few miles away.

In likely to get a new set on my ranger this week but it's a light truck and 2wd so will get the best value milage and price tire available.

I agree with you and like narrow tires off Road and snow and ice. But honestly we have not been getting much snow lately.

General Grabbers A/T is thee best choice.

I got 72 thousand out of TAs on a 2001 dodge 4x4 1/2 ton
Very expensive tire now.
All the work trucks had General, because they were the cheapest
Now I shop for "deal" tires and put weight in the back of the truck.

I also went slightly taller and skinnier than stock on the Tacoma. 255/70R17. I have Cooper AT3 4S on two different trucks and had great luck with them in these northern climates. Cooper usually has great rebates in April each year. Ill buy Coopers again....

I am looking at the General AT/X's. They have some E rated ones in 245/75R17. That'd be a touch narrower than what I have, same rolling radius pretty much.

And they are outline white letters, cause the 90's rock!!

Same size as my 05 f150 , Toyos are hard to beat have them on 2 other trucks this will be the 3rd

I put some Falken WildPeak AT/4s on my F150. Really liking them and they should be great in our snow.
They'll be elk hunting in about a week or so.

Had these on my wife’s f150, really great tire, very little road noise and had excellent wear, I rotated every 5000 miles. Eric

I like Nessy choice...great tires.....but I experimented on some Kumho ten plys....good wear and decent traction so far... haven't had much snow to see.
Price was much cheaper compared with other brands too.

The last 3 sets of tires I've bought are Thunderer Trac Grip best M/T 10 ply for under $1000 a set in my opinion

I was just at the tire shop today. Asked for a quote on KO2’s again since I was happy with them the last time I bought them.
The guy there said they came out with new tires this year, KO3’s. Hoping they’ll be ready for sale before winter. I’m going to buy them once they’re available.

I've ran falken .cooper .wild country. maxxis. bfg. toyo. good year. hankook. general. Goodyear duratrac has been the best by far for me. 2nd choice would be toyo m55 which they quit making but I hear rumors they are coming back out with them.

I am a fan of the BFG K02 tires and have had five or six sets. This last go around on the F150 I got talked into Toyo ATIII's. I've regretted not gettiing BFG'S as they have been very noisy.
I had bought a 99 Ranger that had Toyo's on it. In all fairness they were about worn out. After much thought and mind changing, I finally bought 10 ply BFG KO2's...basically put $1300 worth of tires on a $4,000 truck. I use this as my side by side on the farm and have never been happier.
Looking at the new BFG KO3's for the F150 now but have not yet pulled the trigger. Still debating on something a little less aggressive as my wife drives it mostly and on the highway.

I used to use the BF Goodrich all terrains also but i didnt like them in mud or snow. I now have General Grabbers and i am very satified.

I found an oddity while researching tall and skinny for a 15".

Skinny being 9.5, they make a 30 and a 33 but no 31 or 32. To get a 31 skinny you got to go to a 16" rim. Selection is better at 10.5.

I switched from grabbers to wranglers years ago on my Excursion. Loved the first set of wranglers. The next two sets sucked. Road rough as a cob and required 5-6 wheel weights to balance and crazy loud. Guy told me it must be my rims. Got Falken Wild peaks from local guy, 1 wheel weight on 3 of the 4 tires 2 on other one.

Excursion 3/4 ton felt like a Cadillac on the highway with almost no road noise. Got 70k on them and they’re still going. Lots of gravel and rock roads. Guy that sold them said all the rural mail carriers have switch to them.

Kids switched to them too. All real happy.

I love the Duratracs but they’re pretty soft……which is good I guess but not for tire life.

surprised at how many of you guys have good luck with bfg ko2s. these were the worst lasting tire I've experienced. came apart with less than 20000 miles on them. granted those miles were almost 100%gravel on feed truck

buy a set an let them (age) in the sun a month or two. helps a lot. tire manufactures don't do that anymore

I haven't liked the bfg ko since way back. Maybe they've changed but had a set on a Chevy 1500 and they would slick over and plug the tread on flat wet grass. Made for fun getting out hayfields with a load of hay. But that was over twenty years ago.

Falken's are the best tire I've ever owned...hands down traction

k snow---given your desire to run a solid performing winter AT with some off road traction the rest of the year I'd take a closer look at the Falkens. They arent quite aggressive enough for me in the mud season but they have a devoted following among folks in the snowy regions that have to routinely deal with anything from deep stuff to slush to hard pack from plowing. I also like those Grabbers that you ran before but they dont usually last a real long time. I noticed that once they were worn to maybe 50% that they had almost no traction left but when they are new they are a decent AT. The BFGs always seemed to last longer and have some traction for a longer period of time. Unfortunately ATs just never have enough traction in mud when need it and MTs are so soft that they only last me 12-18 months.

I just paid 220 for a 3680lb rated trailer tire. Prepare for shock if you haven't looked at tire prices lately.

like traps said, falken wild peaks, was very surprised in snow, ice & mud. clean themselves out well and the noise level is low. putting them on my f-250 next month. hopefully on that truck they will preform the same as the f-150.

I just put a set of BFG’s all-terrain 275-70-17 on wife’s 4-runner. These were the new AT3. $302 per mounted and balanced at Sam’s.

These are good tires, my dad is running them on two of his trucks. I wish I would have bought them for summer tires for my Yota, I bought all terrains for the first time in years this spring. Man I forgot how bad all terrains throw rocks! I live on a gravel road and probably 2/3s of the miles on my rigs is on gravel. Nothing gets great mileage on gravel, and siped tires usually get the worst, all terrains that aren't heavily siped usually get about the same as mud terrains, so I usually run the mud terrains because they have better traction and don't pick up rocks in the tread as bad, not only does that help with throwing rocks but it helps with flats because unlike ATs they don't hold rocks in the tread and try and pound them through the tire. I also always run 10 plys (or Load Range E, if you read the fine print a lot of them aren't 10 ply any more, just "10 ply rated") which helps tremendously with flats. I tend to change tire brands every few years, because they are always coming out with some new brand that is pretty decent and costs half what the established brands do, then their price goes up as they get name recognition and when they get too spendy I switch.

I always run studs in the winter, and the Thunderers don't come drilled for studs, so to me they aren't a true winter tire. I'm currently running them on my 1 ton Dodge which seldom gets driven in the winter and liking them. Last few sets of winter tires I've ran have been Ironman M/Ts, real good traction, studdable and decent mileage out of them. Good mileage on the Toyotas, as good as anything I've ran except for a set of old Bandag retreads I got out of a friends basement and haven't been made for a lot of years, Not so great on the diesel Dodge, but nothing gets good mileage on a 1 ton diesel. They were really cheap, but have been going up in price with each set I buy. I like them well enough I will probably buy another set or two before the price gets up where I decide to try something else.

Funny how it all comes down to price even thou the quality may not be as good as people would get if they paid more. (I rarely give advice but when I do I prefer a Heiniken)

Its rated to 100psi, so it was more than I needed, but all they had. It was 250 after mount balance and tax. A set of e.rated tires were 1350 otd 3 years ago. Spent 1900 on the same set of tires 2 years later.

No way, Jose, the white is going out. I was raised with whtiewall tires, white letters are the 4WD truck version of that.



I'll pay for quality and Made in USA when it comes to almost everything.



For sure, last set was around $200 a tire, looks like this time it'll be north of $250 a tire.

The Falken Wildpeak AT/4s come with road hazard from Falken and a mileage guarantee, 55,000 I think.

Spouse has run Duratacs for last several years but is going with Yokohama Geolander A/T XD now. So far happy with the new tires.

Well I want good traction and no flats, I'm willing to pay for that, longevity is nice but I'm not paying three times the price for 1/3 more miles, it just doesn't pencil out.
