Been looking at one of these for on my Herters Model Duck and Goose Skiff. Currently have an older 5 hp Go-Deveil Longtail but it is just too heavy.

Any experienced opinions on the Mud-Skipper would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don’t have any experience with the surface drives.

I did use the 6 hp long tail Swamp Runner from SPS and was surprised at how well it pushed a 1436 John boat with gear. I used it trapping and fishing a few years. Two wing nuts to pull shaft off, then motor is easy to carry. I had go devils for years but the Swamp runners go through way shallower water and transfer more power to prop since there are no U joints, it a straight shaft right out of motor. I’ve moved up to a 16 and 18 hp SPS now on my bigger boats and love them. Not as portable as the 6 though.

The little 6hp Harbor Freight Predator off my old small kit SPS is still riding for the brand though. I use to switch it back and forth from long tail to Ice scratcher. Now it just stays on the scratcher. Kind of a surface drive I guess, when the waters hard enough. lol
