Well, I decided to break down and buy my 2024 South Dakota resident hunting, fishing, and trapping license-- this is the longest I've ever gone into a year without having one. It will run through Jan. 31, 2025, although the fed waterfowl stamp I bought (through the state) lasts through June 30-- I never understand that date range, there must be somewhere in the United States were a waterfowl season goes into June, maybe the north slope of Alaska.
So, what I can do is hunt all South Dakota small game, waterfowl, fish, and trap. No deer, turkey, antelope,or elk included in this general license. All in, it was $147. I wanted the little plastic credit card style license that they now offer so add another $5. I also wanted to get my "Second Century" sticker (they change every year) so I needed to do at least $10 for that so I rounded up and gave Kristi actually $13 for her "Second Century". Thus, I paid the state $165 (so far, I might get an archery deer tag).
What I found amusing was that the state charges an "agent's fee" for you to come on and use their system. They get the same fee as if you went to a retail outlet and bought licenses there. Another interesting twist was that the agent's fee was at $8 but I forgot my furbearer "stamp" so when I added that ($30), the agent's fee went up another $4.That made me smile.
I know I shouldn't whine but its fun

. I know the out-of-state-ers get stiffed a lot more than what I paid for the amount of time they get to use their South Dakota hunting licenses. Still, the price to do these things in South Dakota has basically gone up, it seems, about 200-300% in 25 years. I should look back at some old paper ones and actually do the math. Maybe I will...
