We all know waxed dirt but what about salt mixed with dirt? I know trappers will sprinkle some at there sets. It would be way cheaper to. Any thoughts?

Only problem I as a very novice trapper, can see is the possibility of salt craving critters digging the traps out to get to the salt. I know deer will dig at sites where salt blocks have been 2 yrs after the salt Block was gone

Just sprinkle it at your set. No reason to lug around a bunch of dirt with salt in it when the dirt is already on location.

Just sprinkle it at the set, no need to make it ahead of time. I do recommend getting a 16oz bait jar to put the salt in. The paper things the salt comes in the grocery store dont like trap line conditions and hard to open with gloves on.

You'll spend a lot of time and energy cussin' the Deer. And Porkies, if you have them.

I don't like it because then the dirt is super wet and it rusts traps. Everything attracts deer, so I don't worry about that.
But it works for some people.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Salt will corrode your traps if the traps are not waxed.
I tried it and it makes the dry dirt really soak up the night air moisture.
Also, salt will still freeze at some really cold temp, seriously.
I only tried it one season and never again.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

10-15F is about where table salt fails and you gotta go to harder stuff.

If you can find good locations were the sun won't shine on your sets, salt will work well below O.
I have used it exclusively for a number of years and I have no reason to change.
And I'm talking about late December thru February.

I’ve found using the pipe dream set, using a 60/40 mix of glycol to water, as a spray for the edges and spring lever notches works well for me. But, I pull every thing when it gets cold and snowy. Am learning winter snaring so I don’t have to contend with many inches of frozen ground.

Couldn't be any worse than the alkaline soil my traps are bedded in, but it will be a deer magnet for sure. It will be a mud ball when precipitation comes, and once a hard freeze takes hold, it will be locked up solid. Worth a try if you're in a milder climate that doesn't have dense deer populations. Thought I think even a sparse deer herd may be more attracted to the nutrients

Salt is my go to for my conditions. My personal opinion is my deer are more attracted to the bait or lure you use than the salt

I usually mix 50:50 salt with my wax when I boil my traps. Helps with rusting the traps.

If it snows on my salted sets it is insulated, and it doesn't matter how cold it gets that trap will still fire.
Last year a week into an artic vortex
[Linked Image]
I set when they are calling for snow, it also helps cover my scent to an extent
I had a decent run that week
I salt the bed and I add salt to the siffed dirt. If I'm covering my trap with dirt

Good point. No doubt the bait at my sets is the reason for so many deer happening upon my sets last year.

I used salt. I would use an 8oz canning jar. With cover and lid attached. Punched holes in the lid Made it into an oversized salt shaker.
Salt in layers. Salt bed. Then dirt. Then salt. I never collected dirt ahead of time. Used dirt at site. Once the ground froze solid. I used my dry dirt.

The main thing about using salt. Use feed salt that you would use for animal feed. Cheaper. Also traps need to be treated well. Dye and wax. Salt is rough on metal. At the end of the season. Clean those traps.

Parmesian cheese container works good for a salt shaker.

If you are worried about deer just through some salt out in the road.. the deer will snoop aroud it and most times leave your trap alone

God didn't say it would be easy. He just said it would be.
