I feel as if I may have asked this question before...
HOWEVER, does anyone on here hunt snipe or rail? NO, going on a snipe hunt with a gunny sack or box doesn't count.
Just curious if anyone does. I know it is a little more popular in the south. I got into it last year here in Nebraska and absolutely have a hoot with it. Those snipe are about as hard to hit as a bobwhite.

I don't know that we have snipes but we have woodcock and I used to love to hunt and eat them. They sure can do so fancy fluttering making them hard to hit.

best rail hunting with a 2x4x 12 inch block of painted wood
once you shot gun one- throw the block to where you thought it landed dead
and push through the wild rice to find it.....hopefully you are a good aim and a good pitcher

you also need a good push poler

our boat rules are you can keep gunning till you limit is reached or a miss- then exchange positions

Everything I do is walking here. And unfortunately, not much wild rice. Having a dog makes finding the birds LOADS easier. I just wish they were faster flyers. Too many close range shots lol

Snipe are located any low spot that is moist or edges of lakes/creek that are moist and saturated.
Rail are located in the rushes. Best bet are those chest high rushes/cattails that are in the water.

There are quite a few Jack snipe here before they migrate out. I have seen a few rails to, but think they hide as flush often. I do not see rail listed in the hunting regulations. We have a eight limit on snipe. I would maybe go again if I could find some 410 steel shot other then TSS.

I have only ever limited on snipe once. It was a riot though. Rail just are terrible flyers. Snipe on the other had are a hoot. Smacked a couple in ND last mid October.

Rail remind me of a butterfly in the wind when they fly.

We have some rails in our coastal marshes in NC. Never hunted them. Heard that they are easier to find at high tide.

Fairly accurate. I think of their speed like that but the way they fly looks like a pheasant you hit but dropped the legs on and it kept flying.
For a migratory bird, it has to be one heck of a journey the way they fly lol
