I drove my daughter to indiana recently. It has been several years since I have left this state so some of the changes surprised me. BTW - Thank you to the t-man people that helped in choosing routes and other info, it was greatly appreciated. My first revelation was that as soon as we left oregon the U.S. flag miraculously started to appear everywhere. People on the road were also more curteous and didn't drive like maniacs ( until indianapolis - that was just like portland). It seemed like the roads in the states with the highest gas taxes were where the worst roads were (sorry illinois - you couldn't pay me enough to live there) -- still rural illinois was better than 75% of the west side of oregon. There was much less trash on the roadsides -- I don't know why this surprised me, but it was noticed. Not nearly the homeless problems -- seemed worse in bloomington but that is to be expected as it is a college town and the police presence (with cops that were allowed to do their jobs} was a nice change. This trip made me realize how far my state has fallen. Nebraska, Wyoming, Mo (sorry still cant spell it), Idaho all remind me of what my state was like in the 80s (and wish it was like today). Just some observations of an uneventful trip (the best kind). touring the cummins plant (where my daughter will be working ) was nice as well. Last one out of the house and I will miss her but I think it will be a good thing.

So, someone from a BLUE state is gonna really gonna get on here and talk smack about at least TEN states on the east of MS river that are SOLID red?

And you wonder why so many people like me don't care for you.

It's because we can only handle a set limit of stupidity and you continuously surpass that limit.

Why is it so common for Americans to move so far away from where they grew up?

I’ve noticed this for a while.

I don't know how common it is JP, but most of the people I know that have moved to other areas have done so for employment opportunities.

Indiana is a nice place to live, Bloomington is surrounded by some beautiful hills and lots of public land hunting, fishing, rec opportunities. Hope she enjoys her time there!

Indy is not that bad compared to many big cites. Downtown is safe

I moved a state away in 81 for two reasons. Economy was very bad. Very little work in rural CO. I got by trapping hunting fishing and gardening. Had a baby. Pretty quick I knew I needed money. Another reason was I saw the political handwriting on the wall when the county I lived in adopted zoning. Even in the slow economy ranches were being busted up into 20-30 acre lots and Texans and especially Californians were retiring there. I moved, went right to work, and 6 years later was buying a home. All my kids and all but one grandkid are still here.

We went on a road trip back in May that took us from southwest Va to LA. I-70 in eastern Co was the worst section of road by far in the 5000 miles we travelled. So absolutely miserable it made me ashamed as an American.

Glad that you had a good trip. Bloomington is probably the most liberal town in the state but still nice. We probably go there once a month to shop. Hope she enjoys her time here.

EdP, next time go north at the border. Hwy 385 at Burlington. Go west on HWY 36. Come out at Byers on I70. Bout the same miles takes an extra hour.

I have done many road trips from Oregon. Few thing we noticed , Oregon has a bottle bill, you pay 10 cents for pop and beer cans and can return them empty for your money back. Supposedly so they don’t end up on the roadside. When I travel to other states the roads are normally cleaner than in Oregon. The bums do pick them up though.

Also Oregon being blue, pushes solar panels. We are almost the worst place for them Western Oregon at least and there is government money to be had but Florida and many sunny places we didn’t see as many ?

Oregons homeless population is terrible, our government sucks and has too many handouts for them.

Just a few things I noticed
