I won't live long enough to draw a tag for a truly wild bison hunt, so am thinking I may do a ranch type hunt........not a High Fence type shoot or a fish in a barrel feed lot deal either. Some places that have these hunts for rancher owned bison are likely as hard of a hunt as a guy could get in 1870. Anyone have a ranch they know of that does this type thing? The prices seem to be all over the place. I am thinking I'd rather have a younger one.......Likely better eating, plus I don't want to deal with a one ton carcass.

Just as well hunt a cow. Just as challenging and better eating. Probably cheaper too. I could even get u on the style of hunt u want. One really flighty like a deer or on more on the offense like a cape Buffalo.

My personal favorite buffalo to shoot is a dry cow 4 - 5 year's old , there's plenty of good eating and hang time in a cooler of 24 days makes for some top notch eating for you .

Unless the buffalo herd has been hunted hard and heavy they aren't to worried about seeing a pickup driving towards them , on the other hand I've seen them spook and run when you were within a mile of them .

I know some guys that go each year in Eastern MT. I am not sure which Reservation they hunt but they have gone every year for MANY years and only hunt with late 1800's rifles. I will see if I can get some information out of them. I have seen pictures of them with buffalo with Spencers, Sharps (obviously), Whitneys and Trapdoors. It is kind of their "thing".

I believe you can hunt truly wild bison with a guide in Canada without a draw. You would have to look into it more but I believe its in yukon territory

It sounds like it. They all hunt with different "era correct" rifles each year. They bring my parents a picture of them with the animal and rifle they shot it with and most were bought from my parents. They ended up with the "Family" 1886 Winchester in 38-56 and shot a buffalo with it but that is VERY modern for them. They did it as a favor to my dad.

I *think* there is a place in Fredericksburg Iowa that offers this. Or use to anyways. You'd have to do some google searching.

If you need the meat call a local Amish butcher shop buy a beef. Then ask a farmer if you don’t have access to a couple round bales of hay. Get him to set 2 round bales out in his field. Get a set of cow hors and put on it. Paint it dark brown. Get to field at day break. Check wind direction. Belly crawl across field. If you have a tanned hide put it on your head and zip tie it around your neck. Check wind again. Any hide will do. If no hide grey colored rug will do in a pinch. When getting within range of your weapon take it out.
But if you want to relive the first hunts of early American natives find a sharp stick. Check wind. Army crawl slowly closer. Check wind. When you see the beasts eyes jump on top of it and put the stick into its shoulder. Driving it with all your strength. Aim for lungs.
Have medical personnel on speed dial. Take pics. Thank the farmer. Go home cook steak from beef. Eat drink a beer. Spend money saved on something for your wife

I think non-residents are limited in BC for any hunting opportunity on buffalo.

There are several ranches in the US offering private hunting.

Do you honestly think a reasonable ranch hunt is going to be any less sporting than sitting on a hill and dumping 10, 20, or who knows how many buffalo with a single shot black powder rifle was in the 1870's? Couldn't have been much challenge to shooting so many that you'd need to whiz down the barrel to cool it down! I think the meat it great, plus, if not whacking one in a barnyard somewhere, it should be a "nostalgic" type hunt if that makes sense. I have no desire to do the Land Rover deal in Africa, B'wana.
