This link doesn't work but if someone smarter than me can make it work, the Big Boy 4014 is headed east through Iowa and Illinois this week. There were 25 of these built and this is the only one left operating. The schedule is listed in this link.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

They have one of the 25 on display in a city park in Cheyenne Wy. I was out there in '21 for a mulie hunt and stopped to see the display. It is a very impressive machine even at rest. Seeing it in action would be a thrill. They were originally coal fired but the engine still in service has been converted to oil. Attempts to convert to oil when they were still making freight runs were unsuccessful. Until the Big Boys were produced the rail line had to use two engines to make the run over the continental divide. The use of 2 engines was called a "double header."

Didn't realize it was an oilburner now. #5 fuel oil is lowgrade diesel right? Is that what modern locomotives burn?

I just saw it this last weekend while on a camping trip out that way. A couple years ago I saw it with my wife, and there was a raccoon peering back at us from up underneath of it.
Uggg....this took a bit of work. Had to upload to my photo file then upload to YouTube. Unable to properly embed it because it is a 'short' but here is Gary's video , .16 long , straight to the point. Good video , nice and up close , worth the watch , just click link.
WOW great video. I was a train kid, had all sort of Lionel trains as a kid and a big dirt floor cellar to play on. The tracks to NYC were in the center of town and we were always looking for stuff along the tracks. Thanks for the memories.....jk
