Our area got hammered with rain a couple months ago resulting in record flooding. FEMA is in the area signing people up. We had our basement flood, wrecked some older carpet and drywall. Didnt really lose much for property. Mostly just a small upset in our lives, many were FAR worse off. We did get a decent check from insurance, which was nice. Didnt feel the need to make a FEMA claim because I felt like our insurance check would mostly cover getting us back to where we were as the basement wasnt fully finished.

Am I mistaken in thinking that there is a set number per state and once it’s met, thats all there is for money?

I read that FEMA gives a max of 41k to someone who loses their entire home, which obviously barely builds a garage nowadays. A guy from work said he got SEVEN GRAND for having his empty cement crawl space flood and have sewer back up. A plumber fixed him up for 150 bucks. No property loss or damage. Curious how FEMA justifies this when so many people lost homes or had major damage?

The Federal Emergency Management Agency started off as a great idea, even if it was under jimmy carter, but like all other government bureaucracies wastes money and has become somewhat corrupted. When an entire area is devastated, there is so many people needing immediate help, that it's very hard for even very able officials to prevent fraud and waste, when trying to get money to those who desperately need it to rebuild their lives.

I knew a couple, Allan and Dorinda, who worked for FEMA for many years. They were very good people, who very much wanted to help people. They were often frustrated by how their superiors wasted finances and man power. Allan suffered a stroke and became a prisoner in his own body. He died a few years ago. Dorinda, the last I heard, was working for FEMA again.

People (employees) generally prioritize accomplishing what management rewards them for accomplishing. If FEMA's goal is to distribute money to those affected by a catastrophic event, then distribute money they will. The job is done when the allotted funds have been distributed. If FEMA management made the goal to distribute the allotted funds to do the most good, the outcome would be different, but that apparently would be too hard.

I know when my parents house flooded they “helped” some, but the fact Dad worked and made good money, they didn’t help much. Now folks that didn’t even own their houses or worked were basically given the value of the home itself. In other words, basic Socialism.

It is based on "From Each According to His Ability, To Each According to His Need" Unfortunately it works out to" Greed" not "Need" Just another government program with great intentions, that people scam.

Incorrect- FEMA insures millions of homes under their own NFIP which allows you to buy your own flood policy up to $250K for the dwelling structure and up to $100K for personal property aka contents. If you need more than that, Lloyds of London will sell you excess policies with basically as many zeros as you wanna buy. If you are thinkin their is a big difference between the pay outs for responsible folks who plan ahead vs those who don't lift a finger to protect their own family you are correct.

Sounds like he rec'd funds to do some intense cleaning and sanitation but isn't doing that. Its all fine and dandy until a medical doctor diagnoses some nasty illness that can be traced back to a moldy structure and poopy water.

There's a lot of folks in St. Charles County and W Alton, Mo that make a pretty good living collecting FEMA money every time the river comes up. They park junk cars and have old TV's and furniture laying around just waiting for a flood.
