A best of Craigslist ad -

You want a car that gets the job done? You want a car that’s hassle free? You want a car that literally no one will ever compliment you on? Well look no further.

The 1999 Toyota Corolla.

Let’s talk about features.

Bluetooth: nope

Sunroof: nope

Fancy wheels: nope

Rear view camera: nope...but it’s got a transparent rear window and you have a bucking neck that can turn.

Let me tell you a story. One day my Corolla started making a strange sound. I didn’t give a crap and ignored it. It went away. The End.

You could take the engine out of this car, drop it off the Golden Gate Bridge, fish it out of the water a thousand years later, put it in the trunk of the car, fill the gas tank up with Nutella, turn the key, and this puppy would bucking start right up.

This car will outlive you, it will outlive your children.

Things this car is old enough to do:

Vote: yes

Consent to sex: yes

Rent a car: it IS a car

This car’s got history. It’s seen some crap. People have done straight things in this car. People have done gay things in this car. It’s not going to judge you like a bucking Volkswagen would.

Interesting facts:

This car’s exterior color is gray, but it’s interior color is grey.

In the owner’s manual, oil is listed as “optional.”

When this car was unveiled at the 1998 Detroit Auto Show, it caused all 2,000 attendees to spontaneously yawn. The resulting abrupt change in air pressure inside the building caused a partial collapse of the roof. Four people died. The event is chronicled in the documentary “Bored to Death: The Story of the 1999 Toyota Corolla”

You wanna know more? Great, I had my car fill out a Facebook survey.

Favorite food: spaghetti

Favorite tv show: Alf

Favorite band: tie between Bush and the Gin Blossoms

This car is as practical as a Roth IRA. It’s as middle-of-the-road as your grandpa during his last Silver Alert. It’s as utilitarian as a member of a church whose scripture is based entirely on water bills.

When I ran the CarFax for this car, I got back a single piece of paper that said, “It’s a Corolla. It’s fine.”

Let’s face the facts, this car isn’t going to win any beauty contests, but neither are you. Stop lying to yourself and stop lying to your wife. This isn’t the car you want, it’s the car you deserve: The bucking 1999 Toyota Corolla.

My two Tundras have been the best pick-ups I've owned and I've owned a lot of trucks. I'd still have the 08 but a tree fell on it.

Eh...wot?

Had a 92 extended cab 4x4 with the 3.0 and 5 speed. Put close to 200k miles on it and sold it for what I gave for it. Wife had a 94 4-runner around the same time. She traded it for a mini van, still regret that trade.

My work car was a 91 Corolla with 4 banger and automatic. I parked it at 350+k miles. Overdrive was gone, still got 34mpg. But needed exhaust and tires and that alone was more than double the value of the car.

Current Toyota are a 16 Camry bought new that we drive back and forth everyday. Has 227k and doesn’t use a drop of oil. Think 300k is very doable. Also a 2020 4-runner with 54k, only gets driven when grandkids are around or we need to drive separate.

I've owned four of them. 1985; 1996, 2004, and 2013.

The 85 and the 96 are the very best. I gave the 2004 to my mom and she drives it today. The 96 is the best vehicle I've owned in my life.
The 2013 was junk compared to my other yotas; I traded it in on a RAM 2014 and it has been a good truck.

2019 tundra TRD. Get some terrible lifter noise once in a while when starting it up. It spent a week at Toyota service and it wouldn’t do it for them. I got it home and it did it the first day I used it. Then the abs system gives a loud clunk each time I drive off. They said that’s just the way it is. Embarrassing is what it is. Gonna trade it in for a new Honda crv. Next year when the new models come out.

I have a 2018 Tundra SR5 with the 5.7L. I bought it to replace my 2008 Tundra that a tree fell on. I don't have any of those issues. I don't have any issues at all with it.

I drove my 08 for about 125,000 miles and had no issues other than some rust damage from road salt. I have no doubt I could have easily gotten another 125,000 out of it.

Eh...wot?

They run
But they like gas and have NO ROOM!!! I drove Tacoma for 15 years. 2011 went to full size chevy never looked back...Better milege than the v-6 Tacoma I traded in plus ALL the extra room of a 4 door full size.

Talked to any 2022-23 tundra owners lately. Driving a ticking time bomb. ALL the motors are junk because they lock up. Toyota decided to not issue recall but just replace as they lock up....

Guy I fish with is plant manager at the factory that makes the engine blocks. Back bearing is freezing up

The discontinuation of the 5.7 and it's replacement with the twin-turbo V-6 is why I didn't buy a new Tundra and won't ever buy one newer than 2021 unless they start making the 5,7 again.

The new V-6 looks impressive on paper. More horsepower and torque than the 5.7.

As soon as I saw that I thought, "a V-6 with that much power and torque is not going to be very durable." I was right.

Eh...wot?

The new smaller displacement turbo engines are the result of EPA mandated BS.

Give me a naturally aspirated engine anyday over a turbo.

I've owned 9 Toyota pickups since 1980. Currently have a 2016 Tundra and a 2021 Tacoma. Love them both and would like to update the Tundra but don't trust the new ones. Also have owned at least that many cars, vans and now on our third Hilander. Toyota is all I've ever owned except one mistake in 2002 when I bought an F150. Hated it when I drove it off the lot but was 5,000$ less than a Toyota at the time.

The last time I took it over to POW (Coffman Cove) was many years ago when the Inter Island ferry was still running from Wrangell to CC.
In Wrangell now.

Lots of vehicles in SE look like mine.

This is in the hunting rig parking area on Etolin Island a few days ago.

Manufactures are really missing the boat, stop listening to focus groups and the sales and marketing folks tell you that consumers what ever more options and gadgets on their vehicles.

many would rather buy a simple dead reliable vehicle that will last 30-40 years and go 500,000 miles with nothing more than basic maintenance.
