Scored a nice bull ranged at 41 yards it pass through his shoulder to behind the ribs he went about 25 yards and stood there. I looked around for another bull that might have been coming in (bugled) but before I could look back he was down kicking a bit then done.
He was down within 20 yards of an ATV trail but we still got back to camp at 2:30 AM after skinning, quartering and collecting the meat on the beast. Buddy was in a hurry to return the camper before they closed and head home he has work and training next week so it was 3 days with little sleep like a marathon.
The hunt,
I was looking away in the direction of a bugle I heard, a short time later I hear splashing in the lake/wallow but the cattle were just in there so I was thinking more cattle. It turned out to be a cow elk, at first I thought she was alone on the next check I notice the bigger bull was on the far side of the wallow heading away from me. The cow was in the wallow but his focus was the direction of that previous elk sounding off.
A smaller bull came out of the trees and he was interested in the cow and he worked his way towards the cow with a bigger bull in tow no real aggression they just kept a few yards space between themselves (still early). I was surprised when the bigger bull allowed the younger bull to get closer to that lone cow. The bigger bull broke off and headed into the wallow I ranged the big bull then put the dot on the shoulder before he got into the muddy part of the wallow. Recovering an elk in a wallow would be a total nightmare they are HEAVY!
