many would rather buy a simple dead reliable vehicle that will last 30-40 years and go 500,000 miles with nothing more than basic maintenance. X1000 Here is the problem , planned obsolescence , huge markups on options aka profit centers , no huge need for dealership costly repair bills. Just like anything else , follow the money.

Very nice pickup, an extra cab with a 22re isnt very common. Really? Out west they were by far the most common of that generation. Much more common than either the V6 or the regular cab. I've owned seven Toyotas, four of them I put over 300,000 on and two of those over 400,000. The only one I've ever Rebuilt a motor in the 89 I currently own. Bought it with 130,000 and spun a rod before 150K and discovered someone had already been into that motor. It has been an absolute lemon, rebuilt it, blew two headgaskets in the next 50K (shaved head and replaced it the last time) then broke the newish timing chain and bent valves 10K later. Just dropped a 22RE out of another 89 that I got rearended in and rolled down I-5 on February 29, 2004. That motor has sat since then and I dropped it in a couple weeks ago and it runs like a top. I used to think the 22RE was the best motor they ever made, but I think the 3.4 V6 they put in first gen Tacoma's takes that.

^^^^^^ I've been real happy with a 2.7L four cylinder in a '99 Tacoma that I have over 400K on. They need a valve job about every 200K, but that's about it. mine's a 2010 manual transmission. I like it and it does what I need it to do, but it's a dog. no acceleration. [but that's to be expected, so...]

My 2018 is a nanny truck always nagging me just endless warnings and notices, it beeps and my brain thinks “now what! The truck goes about anywhere I need to go and has the V6 and crawl control, locking rear end. So it’s give and take.
The new ones sound like junk with transmission and motor issues from the YouTube feedback I’ve seen. They lost me at only 4 cylinder being available anyway and a higher price tag for less.return.

^^^^^^ I've been real happy with a 2.7L four cylinder in a '99 Tacoma that I have over 400K on. They need a valve job about every 200K, but that's about it. I've got an 09 with the 2.7 in it. Not near the truck that the first gens were, too high geared, no clearance and wider body but narrower interior of the bed. Everything but the widths could be fixed with aftermarket parts but they still won't get around in the snow or rocks as well as the older trucks. Motor is a dog but a good motor, my dad got 427,000 on a 2.7 before he burnt a valve, sold it to a kid who rebuilt it (when he opened it up his grandpa swore the odometer couldn't be right, no way that motor had that many miles on it) and is still driving it. I see less issues with the 3.4 though than any other motor I've ever seen, with the possible exception of a diesel. Towing a fourwheeler or snowmobile trailer though the 2.7 gets worse mileage than either the 3.4 I had before it or the various 22REs I've had. And I do a LOT of towing of a fourwheeler or snowmobile.

I’d love to have the previous generation Toyota in a 4 cyl just the current trucks are not as easy to work out of as the older models are and they tow hard with the V6 the new 4 cyl can’t be any better.

Same on my 2018 Tundra, Pre-Collision System off, Lane Departure Alert off and Automatic High Beams off. I do use the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control often and really like it.
