I sent a .270 bullet thru my 7mm mag. It didn’t sound right. And the case split and jammed in the chamber. Had to tamp it out. Also missed the deer standing broadside at 50 yards.

I’m sorry for the late response, my uncle had a stroke and I have been driving my aunt 2 hours each way to go visit him.
They are Barnes Factory loads. When I fired the 7 th round it shot the bullet and the neck and shoulder of the brass cartridge out the end of the barrel. When we got the remainder of the razz cartridge out of the gun it looked like a straight wall cartridge. The primer pocket was enlarged and the base of the cartridge was warped.
I sent the email with the questions that Barnes wanted answered and pictures. They replied with another email with a return paid shipping label and I am sending the remaining rounds and brass casings , plus the one that caused the issue. They said they would send me a replacement box. That was the only box that I had with the lot number.

The case reads 270win. I had actually taken 7 bullets out of the box when I went to sight it in and I didn’t notice anything different in length or anything else like that. The bolt closed easily as normal did. I did walk down to check the target and number the holes in the target as I do after e every third shot.

Thanks for the information. The neck and shoulder being gone is the strange part, the pressure must have been extremely high. (hope your uncle recovers.)

Wow, that’s crazy! Weak brass at the bottom of the shoulder? You wouldn’t think the wrong powder would do that. And you’re sure that the neck/shoulder isn’t inside the chamber? If it isn’t, it would’ve had to launch the shoulder out behind the projectile after it separated.
Check the locking lugs on the bolt for tiny hairline cracks too.

If the case was short and straight walled it seems more likely that it was something like a 308 Win or larger that was accidently chambered and when fired the pressures went sky high from swaging the bullet down to the .270 bore.

The case will form to the chamber. Good point here, the case can split and crack, but as long as the barrel is intact the case will not exceed the dimensions of the chamber.

My uncle once accidentally loaded a rifle with reloader 9 instead of 19. The gun was destroyed barrel looked like a peeled banana. Nobody was hurt. Thankfully

Incidents like this are poor brass issues.

Wonder if it separated lower and blew the brass out behind the projectile? Seems unlikely though.

The friend I had help me with the gun had his buddy who is 80 years old and he and his brother build rifles and develop loads, has been a 22 caliber competition shooter and reloader for 60 years. I trust his advice about what happened. He also said it’s unusual for the neck and shoulder of the cartridge to be blown out the end of the barrel. He said it is usually still in the camber. We put a scope in the chamber and the brass is not in there. I will take a look at the bolt with a magnifying glass.

I guess Barnes will check out the brass in detail, but I wonder if they’ll divulge their findings? Could be another firearms anomaly that only a few will know the cause.
