Guy at work has a Savage 99 he's looking to sell. 300 Sav. Serial # shows 1946 gun. It's been drilled and tapped, has an added Marbles tang sight, no cracks, bore looks decent, bluing has some worn spots and pitting on outside of barrel. It's been hunted with and shows it's age.

I'm as green as they get with Savages. I think it's the EG model? Schnabel forend. Wood is in decent shape and has good grain

What's that gun going for in your neck of the woods?

$600-$1000 here. They have gone through the roof in recent years
I wish I had not sold mine in 250-3000

With barrel pitting I'd say that one is on the lower end of the pricing
JMO though, pictures would help

Around here it would list for around 4/500 I would say right around 550 with the tang sight depending on which one it was some of them are worth as much as the gun itself though most run a hundred or little more if it was in better shape you could add 2/300 more the same if it was 308/243

300 savage isn't helping sell it unless you have a collector

I saw Savage 99 in 308 at elkhorn gun barrel this spring , good shape I htink they were asking 725 for it wait for one of their sales where they offer 20% off used and 2% more for paying cash

and your looking at 565 add the tax and your looking at an out the door price of 597

so right around 5-600

450-500 with the wear , some 0000 steel wool and oil and you can usually make that not look near as bad.

frankly the use gun market sort of stinks right now , you have something special and that takes just the right buyer or you have a user and the market is full on new users with a warranty that will out shoot that old gun in ammo easy to find , easy to mount an optic too and in some sort of low maintenance SS or cerecoat

Bore looks good. Upon further review it's more of a freckling on the outside of the barrel and around thr receiver where it'd be carried.

last shop I saw some at had 5 or 6 on the rack and were around 800 each. that was probably 4 months ago. I was interested in geting one but not at that price. about 500 maybe I would have bought one in 308.

prices form 2-3 years ago are not late 2024 prices

all sorts of lever guns were going for big money a few years back

I hope you find someone who is thinking of the prices from 2-3 years back and wants to give you that

I was amazed to see Win 94s post 64 but still US made 1971 year as they were NRA centennials selling for 525 recently

the economy is showing in used gun sales.

guess I better start making the rounds again. I used to stop at ever shop around now and then an check out the used racks but gave up after a while Turing of the high prices..

internet sales option open the market more to small shops and it seems like that's raised their priced in the shop as well.

Pap had one in 250 3000.
Camp commandoes called it a pea shooter.
Today they call 6mm "big".
The Elders were "tuffer".

Friend has one like OP,
tack driver he wont sell for that price.

go look at completed auctions on Gun broker right now , for a Savage 99 in 300savage recent auctions 605-680 in good shape and 9 days ago one with finish wear on the receiver went 450
https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1064456014

that is a national market

since your buying and paying cash
offer him 550 with cash ready to go I think that is fair to both of you

if he thinks a lot more, show him the completed auctions on gun broker.

tell him if he sold it on gun broker he would might get 600 but he has to pay fees
if he took it to a consignment shop and told them it had to sell for 600 he would he 17-20% less so 480-498

Thinking the same. Since it has been drilled and tapped that would lower the price to a collector. It wouldn't matter to me though. I have a .300 savage takedown. I couldn't find anyone local to drill and tapp. I found a gentleman online that made a scope base for them. The 99 is my favorite lever gun.

darkened wood from use , freckle of rust where it was carried

these things already take it out of collector grade

not sure drill and tap as long as it is well done is any worse.

Update - Got this for 4 bills. It actually cleaned up pretty decent. Put a 2-7 Leupold on it and had it shooting 1.5" groups at 100 yds last weekend with my less than stellar eyes.

May use it as my main deer rifle this year.

Drew some attention at the gun range with it. cool In todays age of stainless and plastic something pretty sticks out.

I bought my great uncles 99 in 250-3000 years ago then found a stith mount and put a scope on it, shot a couple deer with it. It shows a lot of use they are deadly accurate, it is now a safe queen!
