Thought I would relate something that happened to me recently that had me thinking about suicide.
Three weeks ago I had total knee replacement surgery. I was prescribed Oxycodone for pain and specifically told to not fall behind in taking it. I followed Drs orders and by day two I had the hiccups. They continued to worsen until about day 3 1/2 when I quit taking them. By then I would have two in immediate succession, than three together then a series of seven + often to the point I couldn't catch my breath until I gasped for air. Dr prescribed me something to kill the hiccups but it did not work. I had to wait until all the oxycodone was washed out of my system. It went on for 56 hours after I had my last dose. Unable to eat or sleep I could get a sip of tea down between hiccups if I timed it right.
All this time I was on no pain meds so I had asked the Dr for an alternative and he sent in a prescription for Hydrocodone. My sister went to pick it up and told the pharmacist I could not take any oxycodone and he told her " Good to know we will put it on his chart so he won't get it again" She brought it home. By this time I had been without hiccups for about 6 hours. Nothing to eat during this time as my throat hurt terribly. My knee was hurting so I took one of the "Hydrocodone" without reading the label. Can't read without my glasses. Within an hour the hiccups were back and I then read the label. They gave me more Oxycodone. 36 more hours of these terrible spasms. Finally did get the hyrocodone. Most horrible 4 days of my life.

Never heard of that reaction, glad it's gone now.... When I had my replacement surgeries oxy was prescribed, but I only took a couple pills the first 2 days....don't trust that stuff.

Stand on your head and drink a tall glass of water.

Dang! All kidding aside that sounds like a real rough patch. Hope you’re better now!

Your hiccups were likely caused by being intubated during surgery. It's pretty common to suffer hiccups after intubation. Swallowing the pill through your injured throat, probably started the hiccups, rather than a drug interaction.

Hiccups are a common side effect of Oxycodone. Surgery center said they have a case about once every two weeks because of Oxycodone, just not as severe as I had. I was not intubated during surgery.

"Hiccups are a rare but potentially debilitating side effect of opioid treatment, with only a handful of reported cases in the medical literature. The pathophysiological mechanism linking opioids and hiccups is unknown, and a lack of evidence exists concerning the optimal management of the condition."

Being intubated is a common cause of hiccups.

Your hiccups may well be caused by taking opiods, since they occurred in close proximity of taking them.

I suspect many practitioners blame the opiods, because they be liable for mistakes during intubation. Injuries during intubation are a major source of malpractice claims in America, costing many millions of dollars.
